Max lacks atmospherics, volumetric modeling, Houdini level effects
Every program has it's unique set of capabilities. It's often the case that multiple programs are required to complete the task. If you don't care for Max's offerings, go ahead and use the other programs that you mention. There is no software in the world that can do everything.
