Hey guys,
I have a problem here where Max 2022 does not save the position of the windows (material editor, render settings, environment dialog etc.)
After each start of 3dsMax, I have to rearrange my windows to the desired layout.
Also, Max does not save certain settings from the preferences window. For example, I disable the selection highlight preview. After the next start, that feature is enabled again. Is there a solution to this?
Hello @kossatz ,
Chances are that windows doesn't want to give it permissions to save your local settings. You could try running it as administrator to get things the way you like them, then run normally. When you try that, does it work?

Hey Alfred,
I just tried that, it did not work. The windows are still opening up at the default position. The strange thing is: The position for the environment dialog is saved correctly. It always opens up in the location where I last positioned it. But material editor and render settings window open in default position on screen 1.
Also installed Max 2022 on my private workstation at home, same issue there!
That is weird. Do you think maybe some kind of realtime protection might be blocking it like anti-virus or something?

I don't think so. Workstation in the office runs on Windows 10 and has default protection, machine at home has Windows 7 and has third-party protection.
I mean, both machines are running versions up to 2021 just fine without issues.
Oh I see, my apologies I must have missed that before. That does sound like a bug then, may be worth submitting a bug report.

I did report it as a defect yesterday over in the feedback forums.
We are currently checking if all of our machines are affected.
I tried to further investigate the issue by comparing the .ini of Max 2021 and 2022.
The issue can be fixed to the material editor window by copying the [MtlEditorPosition] values. The material editor window is in the correct position, then.
I tried to do the same for [RenderDialogPosition], but there is no such entry in the .ini of Max 2022.
Also, I made this observation:
- open the render dialog, window pops up in the middle of screen 1
- position the render dialog window somewhere else, close the window
- open the render dialog again, it will pop up in the middle of screen 1
So it will not remember its position in the current session?!?
Thanks for your question! This is a known issue that's being fixed right now (and noted in this other Area Forums thread).
What's happening is, some plugin updates are triggering a "silent crash" when 3ds Max closes which can prevent the last settings/preferences from being saved. We're in contact with the plugin manufacturers to try to ensure this doesn't happen in the future, so I just wanted to make sure people were aware. Thanks!
Well, that is only true for the lost settings in preferences etc.
The window positions being reset are not caused by any plugins. I got confirmation from the beta forums that this needs to be addressed by Autodesk, because they messed up some Qt library.
Hi @kossatz ,
Thanks for the comments. These are Qt conflicts between Max and some other plugins, and both Autodesk and the manufacturers are working on this. We have identified a "unilateral" fix for Max, but we're also asking if some plugin creators can update their plugins as well until we get the fix released. When I hear more details I'll let you know!
The script found in the other thread seems to work fine for me. FYI, I have V-Ray, Phoenix, and TyFlow installed in Max 2022. Thanks!
