Max 2017 crashing

Hi guys

We recently jumped up to 2017 once the service pack came out. It is a nightmare to work with for production and probably have to go back to 2014 at this rate.

It is completely pot luck chance (with high probability) if max will crash in the following cases:

  1. when submitting via backburner. Requires a complete shutdown of max and reload the scene to work.
  2. having more than one instance of max running at once will generally cause a crash when you want to open any other scenes on those instances. Requires a complete shutdown of max to stop this.
  3. random crash when working (I know Max has always just randomly crashed)

Anyone else experiencing this? I've installed on all workstations and all do the same. It is unbelievably annoying especially after all the stability hype Autodesk drummed up regarding this release.

Thanks

I have been trying to use it since April. A few weeks ago they (VizPark)
said that the latest 3DS MAX SP fixed it, so I reinstalled, and crashed
immediately.

Thanks

It is strange that it works with no problem in some of my files but in others (especially the major project which is an on-going project) it crashes just about all the time at render time.

Just to mention it, 2017 is not listed as compatible on their product website.

Dear all,

Same problem here, without walls and tiles, without multiple opened max,

I sent my report, waiting.. in the same time trying to install the security fix.

Please Autodesk team, i try to understand, why you develop each year a version instead of one for two years and get a clean version without bugs ?

Honesly regarding the cost of this software, it becomes very disturbing !

Hi hugoZLDC7,

Are you using V-ray plugin? I'm trying to remove the v-ray to see what will happen. Right now all my users are fed up, Autodesk could not help,I spent almost 7 weeks on it myself, solidcad tried to help and they spent almost two week but nothing and they decided to escalate it back to Autodesk again.

To the Initial question, for Ben.  Max 2016 and 2014 never randomly crashed on me.  I work with 2016 for the last 3 months after downgraded from 2017, and i haven't got any random crash. Unwrap_uv has some issues. But i work 50 hour weeks with one crash maximum. 2017 is seriously unstable and doesn't fit for production environment. In 2017 there are some very interesting ideas with the viewports etc but they are unstable. I was expecting to have at least 2 or 3 hotfixes the last 3 months, to address the issues. Or at least an official update about our porblems. What worries me even more is what are we going to do with windows 10?  Microsoft releases a new version every year at least nowadays. I don't want to defer updates for 12 or 20 months it poses a security risk.

Hi Whitebirch studio,

I was wandering if you could share your hardware setup and OS details. and how many monitors do you use ? I have random crashes with 2017 on dual 12 core xeons,    64gb ram and titan x the old one, plus windows 10 pro. and 3 x 1080p monitors.

I was wondering if i could change a card or something i might start using 2017.

Hi Hugo, I empathise ,  i assume you are on the rental program. I have a perpetual license with a subscription( which is not offered anymore) ,  Is there any way for Autodesk customer support to allow you access to the 2016 version ?

On AD site it says that with a subscription you have access to previous versions

http://www.autodesk.com/subscription

One way to check quickly is to go to your desktop app, click my products and click access my complete list of products. That will direct you to your online account page.

You can back save to 2016 and use the remove missing plugin script
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/removemissingplugins
to remove the art render plugin that pops up.

Hello @hugoZLDC7,

I did check your logs and saw 3 of them submitted.  One was from a lack of updated service packs, which I can see you already addressed.  The others were errors with Visual C++ Runtime libraries.  Your report says you are on windows 8.0, and it's possible that the library has been updated and wants 8.1 or there is an installation problem with the vc runtimes.  The last crash is related to a Max bug, unfortunately.  Vray likely has nothing to do with your problems unless it's old, which according to your logs it isn't.

@Anonymous,

I have no reports submitted from your forum email address, nor do I see any past or present support cases in your name so I'm not sure what is happening with you but I'd like to help.  If there is anything you can tell me or a different address you used to submit your reports or cases I'm happy to take a look.

@alexnode,

MS announced that W10 is the last OS they'll be making and they will upgrade on top of it.

EDIT: I removed a comment about W10 plans by MS.  Not really my area of expertise.

Best Regards,
