Is there a simple way of changing  just the colour of a standard material, Ie siding from white to any colour other than white, 3ds max design 2016/2015/2014.. Or do i have to create a new material all together and hunt down an image of the colour i want etc ?

Use the Material Editor to edit your material.  Use the eyedropper tool in there to load the material of the object.  It is most likely the color swatch by the Diffuse settings that you will want to adjust.  Click on it, and the color picker will pop up and let you choose whatever color you'l like.

Sorry, didn't realize you were using a Bitmap.  You can try using the Color Correction map, but it is probably better to adjust the bitmap image in an image editing software.  You might also be able to use the Mix map to replace colors.

What exactly are you trying to do?  Can you post an example of your bitmap, and explain what you want to change?

you can use an rgb multiplier on a white map i think, so you virtually have all colors possible.

there also a maptype called rgb tint that can be applied to your white map, which should work very similar.

When i add the rgb multiplier or the rgb tinter the material does not show correct in the viewport, it renders fine though. any thoughts. ( view = realistic with maps)

Some maps just won't translate into the viewport.  But, if it isn't important to see the affect of the RGB Multiply map in your example, you can right click the bitmap of the bricks and select Show Map in Viewport.  It won't be color adjusted, but you'll be able to see how it is being mapped on your object.  Very useful for adjusting UV Map sizes and such.

If your source map is greyscale (or black and white) another option is to use a Mix map.  Drop your bitmap into the Mix Amount and use the color swatches to control the color, or even use other maps in there.  I use Mix a lot.

I've got 2 simple questions regarding the Slate Material Editor:

1. Is there a way to immediately go to the material of the selected object without using the eyedropper? For example, select the object, then in the material editor click on some button and it frames the material that is assigned to the selected object.

2. Can we make Slate Material Editor highlight with white outline the material of the selected object in the Navigator window?

If your material is something simple like lines or brickwork patterns then I would create a mask from that texture and use a blend material to overlay the lines. That way you can alter the base material colour just by changing the diffuse.
