How to get UVW map textures of real objects?

How would one go about getting a UVW map of a real object with logos? Example below. I am trying to make a similar texture, but for a Union Pacific locomotive rather than the BNSF one shown. Is there an easy way to generate these or a good place to get them? Does it require a 3D scan of a real locomotive, or is it just coloring and importing logos with the Viewport Canvas? If so, how do you import a logo with the viewport canvas? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hello @maxm360 ,

It looks to me that this was created in either Photoshop or Substance Painter using photo reference and some stencil / touch up techniques.  You could use viewport canvas but there's a fair amount of blending a subtlety here that probably requires a more advanced image editor.

If you have high res photos of your intended train, you could use the transform->warp or perspective tools of photoshop to even it out and make it straight, and then you could project that onto the uv's.

I think a lot of this texture has been manually rebuilt or painted over.  The front looks photo like, but the sides and back look painted to me.   The person who made the train made sure to use a lot of a straight lines and then just planar mapped each major side and packed them into 3dsmax, then exported to for painting, imho.

Best Regards,
