How to determine the version year of a .max file?

This is a problem that I face with all 3D applications. Is there are way to find the version (2017? 2018? 2019? 2020?) of a given MAX file?

TIA

-Ramon F. Herrera

ps: After trying 3ds Max 2019 and 2020, I decided that the latter runs great.

Hi @Anonymous

You can use the MaxFinder executable (C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2020\MaxFind.exe), browsing to the folder containing the .max files > press Start > double click on the 3ds Max files you want to check the version, this can also be used from inside 3ds Max, see this Autodesk Knowledge page for more details: How to identify which version of 3ds Max a scene was created with

The complete versions number will vary for each update, service pack, etc. released, the second value will always be 0 for the first release of that version and will generally increment by 1 for each update, service pack, etc. released

3ds Max 2020

  • Build:    22.x.x.x

3ds Max 2019

  • Build:    21.x.x.x

3ds Max 2018

  • Build:    20.x.x.x

3ds Max 2017

  • Build:    19.x.x.x

3ds Max 2016

  • Build:    18.x.x.x

3ds Max 2015

  • Build:    17.x.x.x

Thanks for reaching out with your question, please let us know if that solution work or not for you.
