File open Error-error loading ParamBlock2

After loading a file, I go to the file menu to open a different file, I click on the file name and get "file Open Error:Error loading ParamBlock2, click ok, get File Open Error: Invalid file-only partially loaded, click ok, get 3ds Max: File Open Failed-then the path to the file I'm trying to open, click ok, and then nothing happens.  I have a completely blank scene.  Any ideas?

Hi,

Try This: open a new Max scene, go to File, Import, Merge and start merging a small amount

Of your objects, if they merge correctly save your scene and merge few others, repeat this process

Of merging and saving until you find the problematic object/objects.

After that, we can check why these objects are causing problems.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for your post. 😊

I wanted to follow-up here to see if the suggestion from @miledrizk had helped? Merging objects can definitely be a very good way of identifying an issue within a given scene file if it will not open properly.

Additionally, you may also try some of the recommendations listed in the following article (which also includes the Merge step) to see if they can help clear the error: "Error loading Paramblock2" message when loading certain scene files into 3ds Max.

Thanks so much, and looking forward to your update!

Folks,

This is happening on every file.  I can usually get past it by exiting out of Max and then re-opening, and then opening the file I want to work on.  I am using Substance if that helps.

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous, thanks for the additional information. 😄

Were you able to look at the link provided? It notes it could be from bad/residual plugin data or corrupted preferences.

Could you try the following if nothing else has helped so far?

  1. Reset the 3ds Max preferences.
  2. Perform a Clean Uninstall of 3ds Max. (The steps will remove all core 3ds Max components, missing or bad registry keys, TEMP files, remnant files and folders that may be corrupted/no longer readable, and the like.)

Thanks so much!

I tried re-naming the ENU folder.  It reset all of my settings but the problem persists.  Mind you, I've got this exact same issue on two different machines with installs of Max 2020 and Substance plugin.  I have the latest version of both installed.

Thanks so much for the update. Do you have any other third-party plugins or scripts used within your scene files/installation (apart from Substance)?

Some examples would be:

  • Bercon maps
  • RailClone
  • Forest Pack
  • Floor generator
  • RichDirt

I'd also be happy to take a look at one of the scenes encountering the issue when loaded into 3ds Max, to see if there are any plugins that come up missing on my test machines or receive the error upon File > Open.

Please feel free to share an affected scene file by uploading to this private folder: You can upload your file(s) here. (Password has been PM'ed to you.)

Thanks so much for your continued help with this!
