3dsmax.exe never shutting down in 2017 SP3

Hello,

it's really annoying - everytime i shut down 3dsmax, the 3dsmax.exe stays in the Task Manager with about 500mb memory in use. If i start and shut down 3dsmax several times (even without opening any files/projects - just start and close) that leads to multiple instances of 3dsmax.exe staying in the Task Manager, each with about 500bm memory usage. That is not a normal behaviour and never happened before here.

What could be the cause of that?

Hi,

Without actually finding out why it is happening, I think this will fix it:

Paste this code into a new text file, save it and rename the extension to .ms and then copy it into your Scripts/Startup folder (C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\scripts\Startup).

callbacks.addScript #postSystemShutdown "((dotNetObject \"System.Diagnostics.Process\").GetCurrentProcess()).Kill()" id:#killMax_CBK

Hello @Anonymous,

I've had a couple reports of this and it has happened to me twice now.  The first time it stopped after a windows update that I was delaying a reboot for and the second time was recently.  I've gone ahead and logged this as a bug in the tracker.  Did @darawork's fix work for you?

Best Regards,

Hello @Anonymous,

Did @darawork's script work for you as a workaround?  I have logged this issue into the bug tracker as well.

Hello,

thanks but - no, it didn't work, as it is giving an error itself when i start Max.

I have a Laptop and a PC with exactly the same plugins and scripts installed. On my Laptop 3dsmax is shutting down properly, on my PC not. Both systems run WIndows 10 with the latest updates.

Hello @Anonymous,

Yes, it's occasionally happening on my laptop as well, but not on my desktop.  (Opposite scenario.)  I've logged this issue into the bug tracker, there's not much else I can do for the time being.  For what it's worth I don't think reinstalling is going to help resolve it.

Hello @Anonymous,

I wanted to follow up one more time here.  While this is a bug, I've been successful with using @darawork's script.  I've gone ahead and made the .ms file and called it taskkill.ms and attached it to this message.  I wonder if there was perhaps some kind of copy/paste error before so I just wanted to reach out and supply the script file (kudos to Darawork) in case that was the issue.

You can take the script out of the zip and place it at:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\scripts\Startup

Then, you should have some relief from the processes staying in memory.  I've tested this for a few days now from Max 2014 to 2017 and it does work very well.  I'd just hoped to get it working for you since it was your thread.

The script was written by JHaywood of CGSociety and credit is given in the script.  Also thank you Darawork for the find.

Best Regards,

I'm having this problem with Max unable to terminate too! This has been happening to me for at least the past 3-4 years now. It seems that it all started with Max 2012 or so. I still have this happen to me although not so frequently as 1-2 years ago. I'm on Max 2016 SP3. It's really strange. This needs to be fixed.

Hello @Anonymous,

That's nice of you to say, thank you!  I've been here for about 3 months and I assure you that Autodesk is really stepping up their game when it comes to support and addressing bugs.  I'm quite happy to be a part of it!  Kudos to @darawork for finding the script in the first place!

Have a great week and best regards!
