3DS objects importing to Unity at different scales (within same file)

I've created my assets in a single 3DS Max (2016) file, and dropped it into my Unity (v5.5) Project folder.

However one of the asset types (cylinders) are displaying at a much larger scale, see images below:

I created these by first creating a single Cylinder then Surface Constraining it to the sphere (globe). I then Cloned (Instance) each additional Cylinder.

Strangely the cylinders at each of the poles are scaled correctly, despite being an Instance of the others.

I have tried Reset XForm but this disables Surface Constraint

I ran a test deleting all the country mesh's from the 3DS file and re-importing to Unity and the cylinders display at the correct scale. I don't understand why this is when they are completely unrelated.

Can anyone provide advice re how to make the cylinders scale correctly in Unity?

thanks

Correction - the cylinders are related to the country meshes - they inherit from them (mesh is parent)
