3ds max crashes after multiple file openings

Hello everyone,

I have a big problem with 3ds max 2017.

When I open several files in a row with the same 3ds max, I have a problem displaying menus that occurs.

The menus become empty (quad menu, filter selection etc ...)

I am obliged to restart my computer so that the problem disappear.

I have searched for a long time in this forum solutions corresponding to my problems but I found nothing similar.

Here is my configuration:

PC i7, 16 gig of ram.
Nvidia 1060 graphics card.
Windows 10 and 3ds max 2017 with the SP3

I have tried everything.
Updating the drivers,
Reinstall and reset 3ds max. Nothing works.
And I have the same problem on another computer with also Windows 10 and the same 3ds max.
Looking through the forums, it seems that the problem comes from my windows 10 update but I'm not sure.

Thank you for helping me several months that I seek a solution.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

This is a new one for me, I haven't seen this happen before.  Whenever something wildly different comes up, I have two or three main suggestions to start with.  First, can you please try to reset your user settings for me?  Second, can you please try to switch to DX9 mode to see if there is any change?

Are there any plugins used in these files?  Does this only happen with specific files or does it happen with all files?  Thanks for the information!  I'm not sure that this is a W10 problem, need more clues to really say for sure.  What kind of monitor do you have (link please or model #)?  Also, what resolution do use on your monitor?  Thanks!

Best Regards,

Hello Alfred,

First of all thank you for your response and suggestions for adjustments.

I have a great news, I finally found out where my interface crashing problem came from.

The problem appears when I open a file that contains a scene explorer anchored to the left and I open another file also with this same scene explorer anchored to the left.

If I detach the scene explorer and it switches to floating window mode the problem disappears.
So in summary it forces me to detach the scene explorer after each opening of files but thanks to this manipulation I have no more crashes.

It's been at least 3 months since I was looking for a solution to this problem.

Thank you Alfred for your suggestions, before that I tested all your suggestions but without success unfortunately.
I even switched to display drivers dx 9 then opengl, I reset my settings by removing the famous hidden folder ENU so that it recreates a clean whole. For information I use 2 pc laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. And I have no plugins installed anymore.

Here I was very surprised to be the only one to have this problem while it is present on 2 pc totally different and new (bought in 2016, a 13 inch lenovo with no graphic card and a 17 inch MSI with GTX 1060) except Windows 10 as common points, I have a 3rd pc laptop asus and I bought in 2013 on which I do not have this problem of display crash while I also have windows 10 but I have disabled the updates windows because Had a big crash with blue screen that had forced me to do a system restore and to go back to a windows 10 before the anniversary update. That's why I think my problem comes from this famous birthday update of windows 10.

Here is, I hope that a windows update or 3ds max 2017 will solve these various problems of display that I notice very present on all kinds of pc pro or not because I will be a lot of company as a consultant And I notice that the new max 2017 display system is very slow and lacks stability.

Thanks Alfred

Thank you very much for the detailed post @Anonymous, I really appreciate it.

This is odd, I don't have a bug reported for this issue with the scene explorer.  I wonder, if I created a private folder for you, could I get my hands on the file?  I'd love to make a new bug report about this and send that to QA to be investigated.  If it's not possible, that's ok but I thought I'd ask.

I wonder if you have multiple local explorers your scene.  If you go to Tools->Manage local explorers, does it list more than 1 there?

There were some pretty weird issues with W10 after AU, and I wonder if the SP for Max has some workarounds for those issues but maybe causes problems now if AU *isn't* installed.   Thanks so much for the info!  I really appreciate the time you took to type that up.
