2024 Color Picker

The color picker in Max 2024 has changed. It's driving me kind of mental.

Selecting the top buttons Scene or Display is confusing. Regardless of which is selected the spinners do not seem to work independent from each other. For instance, adjust value spinner and then saturation spinner gets changed also. Certain values will not stay put. Like Saturation will accept 188 and 255 but not anything in between. Weird and frustrating.

Does anyone know a way to get the old simpler and better (imo) color picker back in Max 2024?

far right column. type in 15 for value, the picker will not accept that and  changes 15 to 21 WTF?

Some behavior in the Color Picker may look wrong, but it is working correctly. The new Color Management engine is working under the hood, and the spinners are working together to show the right values for the colors. It's different from the past, where colors and spinners were more static.

I'll check again this report, and see if there is something we can improve.

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply Giuseppe. The color picker behaves very strange. What good is a spinner that goes from 0-255 but will only accept values of 0, 21, etc? Pick a color. Try inputting the number 5 into far right (Scene) column value spinner. Close the picker. Pick the  same color again and the color picker dialog opens but will show that the 5 you entered is now a 0. Enter 15 close. Pick the color again. Color picker opens but the 15 you entered is now a 21. ???????

Would rather not have to wait for a fix. Is there a way to revert to the old color picker? This is causing me a lot of trouble and frustration. Thanks!

Which version are you using? I don't see this behavior in my current installation. Opening and closing the Color Picker doesn't change the values

Using 3DS Max 2024.1 = most current version I believe.

Just tested again. IMPORTANT. I am using Vray 6 update 1.2 (most current version). This seems to happen only with Vray materials. Just tested on 3DS Max Physical Material and problem does not exist.

With Vray material you don't even have to open and close. just type 15 in to lower right value filed. then click in the saturation field just above.  the 15 you enter in the value filed changes to 21.

type 5 into the value field. click in the saturation field. the 5 stays the same. close the selector click on the color swatch again. color picker opens. the 5 is now a 0.

Ah! Thanks for this piece of info. I was on Arnold. Let me try this. If so, we need to open a discussion with Chaos.

This the reply from Chaos support :

Seems like it's an Autodesk thing since Standard and other 3ds Max native shaders exhibit the behavior too. It seems to be related to Max's Color Management - it does not happen if it is unmanaged. We'll see if something can be done on our end. If not, we'll most likely contact Autodesk.

That’s odd that you cannot reproduce it. The Chaos support team can reproduce it and then some. Seemthe Chaos support post in the thread at the link below.

Hate to see this languish cause you cannot reproduce it. It is for sure a problem and for me, a Vray user, Max 2024 is un-usable until this gets fixed.

I can reproduce the issue using the Legacy Standard material. With the Physical material is not happening as much.

We are looking into this.

New Color Picker does not work with Standard Material and does not work Vray Material and possibly does not work other materials and color swatches. It is unusable for all 3ds Max users who also use Vray.

Seems like a big problem to me. New color picker clearly was not adequately tested before release. If it doesn't work correctly with 3ds Max Standard Material then.......I suggest this might deserve some urgency in fixing?

Thanks for your follow up so far and thanks in advance for giving this a Priority Alert to those in charge of fixing it.

It's tested and works well with the default in Max at the moment, Physical and Arnold materials. There is still space for improvement, with legacy 8-bit maps like Checkers, and 3rd-parties plugins were we have no control.

Color Management is a new feature, and we keep improving it.

Sorry for the disruption in your workflow.

Hello, has anything new happened to this problem, its becoming a big issue in the community? For me personally i had the best surprise when opening and saving a scene with 2024 only to find out that my entire color scheme has changed due to the color picker update. If i did not had a back-up i would had not find out this changed. Your new color picker works only with Physical Material, and CoronaPhysicalMtl, also it works on all materials if you don't use the gamma workflow.  So for the moment i'm only using 2024 only for modeling, rendering is done with 2022 for now.

Nothing has been done to fix it and it makes max 2024 pretty much unusable with vray and other materials. No additional tesponse from Adesk has been forthcoming. At the least, the ability to revert to the legacy color picker  should be implemented. A badly botched and inadequately tested “new feature” with no acknowledgment of the problem.

The color picker is broken for Vray materials.  Which makes the program pretty much unusable.  Autodesk's support for their products is terrible.
