Autogrid does not seem to work anymore

Autogrid has been working inconsistently for years now.  At times when I try to draw on the angled face of an object, the grid functions as if the face were at an angle other than what it actually is.  Not horizontal or vertical, but at some odd angle in-between.

From your screenshot, could you check is there any default smooth groups in your object? If yes, you should remove all smoothing groups from it. Just apply a smooth modifier which removes all smooth groups by default and then retry to Auto Grid again. Let me know the result. Thank you.
