There are Express versions of Visual Studio that are free.
I thought that the 2012 Express versions only built Metro stuff.
This MAY have been changed or is due to change due to developer pressure on Microsoft.
This will need to be confirmed.
The Visual Studio Express 2010 versions may be needed, and work fine,

I read on a blog that they will have a desktop version of Express too. However, on the page I linked to, 2010 is still available. 2012 is still at the RC stage.
You can download 2008 here

and 2010

I'm not sure what blog your reading, but they are all desktop programs.

Kerry was talking about 2012, the release candidate (RC) is available for download. It coincides with the release of Windows 8. Similar to the past, they were proposing a version of Express for asp, mobile, etc., but not a desktop version. MS claimed that you needed full Visual Studio to develop for the desktop. This week they caved in to pressure from dev's and said that a desktop version of Express would be available. I read so many blogs, I'm having trouble finding the post, but I believe it was from Code Project.
Here is the link to the 2012 RC page. They have versions for Web, Windows8, and Team Foundation Server.
Just to make it official

Visual Studio Express 2012
for Windows Desktop
To create desktop apps in Visual Studio 2012, you need to use Professional 2012 or higher. After the release of Visual Studio 2012, we plan to release Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop, which will provide a Visual Studio Express 2012 product for desktop development. In the interim, Visual Studio 2010 Express products - Visual Basic 2010 Express, Visual C++ 2010 Express, and Visual C# 2010 Express - will remain available for free download.
