iProperties available in Windows Explorer

iProperties available in Windows Explorer

Users request the possibility to have Inventor iProperties available in Windows Explorer adding columns in detailed view.

I wish you had added just one word onto the end of the Title... "Columns". Reason being, it's already possible to view the iProperties of an Inventor file in Windows Explorer. All you have to do is right-click and click "iProperties". And a lot of Inventor users know this, and therefore won't vote for this idea.

But I think a lot of Inventor users would love the ability to display iProperties in Windows Explorer columns. In fact, it's already been discussed and wished for to some extent here and here. However, I think your post is more on target by asking for iProperties in general rather than one specific iProperty.

However, if Autodesk could modify the title and make it clear that the request is for iProperties in Windows Explorer columns, I think the idea would get a lot more support.

As DRoam also pointed out on another idea, this can idea can also be found here.

Open File & Place Component Dialog boxes

This posting doesn't really have any more momentum unfortunately.

I like that you suggested showing iProperties in the general Windows Explorer dialog boxes.

This is a really good idea.  Has anyone brought up the point that when using the "open file" dialog from within Inventor, you can actually select the iProperties as a column, however, the data does not get populated?

It's like they started on it but it never got there...

@chrisw01a, if you're talking about the Description field, I think the reason it's not populated is because that's not actually the Inventor Description iProperty you're seeing, it's a generic Windows property.

If we're talking about the same thing (the "Choose Details" dialog box), then if you scroll through you'll see that the standard Inventor iProperties are not available--Part Number, Stock Number, etc. The only reason "Description" is there is because that happens to be an available Windows file property. So I don't actually think Autodesk started on this in any way. But it would be great if they did! (...and finished of course)

You are correct! I can't believe I missed that. Wishful thinking I
suppose.

I am all for the Item number as well, you might be able to make this go into the Document ID windows column

This would be fantastic if we could get common part descriptions in windows explorer.

It sure would. I would use it every day.

Is there any consideration on this?

It would be so nice to see "Description" in file browsers!

We use part number for file name so we must hover over or see thumbnail to identify the part.

Similar idea: Show iProperties in Open Dialog Box. Hopefully enabling one will enable the other.

Yes that would be nice.

You can also use Inventor Design Assistant in Windows Explorer to see your preferred iProperties.

See the explanation I posted here:

Alternatively (I wish I could write) a vba/vb add-in to show the iproperty fields in Excel.

This could use Apprentice - I'm looking at documentation now  on the customization forum (I can't program).

Select 10 or 20 idw files & have the iproperties populate an Excel work sheet.

Files in rows, iproperties in columns - option to add custom iproperties too.

Click in a cell to make an edit & write back to the file.

A useful title block checking/populating/editing tool.

A standalone add-in would possibly be better (more complicated - like the BoM but for Drawing files?), imagine everyone has Excel anyhow.

Could someone who can program knock this up please?

Andrew

I can't believe more people haven't voted for this! My new boss has done away with Vault, and we are moving all of our files I to Dropbox to allow file sharing. I am able to populate AutoCAD properties Summary Title and Summary Comment and they are populated in the meta grid in Windows 10. Inventor files do not populate! This is a HUGE issue and you guys must fix this!!! PLEASE!!!
