Hello. I just started to use 2014 moving up from 2012. When I'm working in a drawing there seems to be something that is causing me to switch from model space to paper space. It is a bit difficult to understand what I'm doing that is causing this but it seems to be something to do with panning in the drawing. Also, if I select an object and escape from it it seems to happen but this might just be in conjunction with panning.
I have not changed how I work in AutoCad and function the same in 2014 as I did in 2012. I don't ever recall this issue with the older version.
Any thoughts?
Oh, it is not happening from the auto save - auto publish issue I read about.
Thanks!

hi, have you install all the latest updates? and see how it goes. thanks. hope it helps.
Hi wkoniewicz,
CHSPACE (Command), that would impact the interaction between model view and Layout
the 1rst thing that you should try is reset the AutoCAD profile to default, and check if same behavior happen.
Secondly, the last hot-fixes and service pack will be recommended to apply for your release
Tell us if some of resolution help you one,
Yours faithfully,
Thanks to both of you. After ennujozlagam's reply I did install the service pack and the hot fixes. Had not considered even looking for them which was a big oversight. However, after having done that I'm still experiencing the problem. I can reset to default and see what that does.
Thanks for the help!
Hi Wkoniewicz,
I am just comming back concerning your request, have one of the solution been able to resolve the issue you are having with AutoCAD 2014.
Yours Sincerely,
If your vp has Display lock turned on and you attempt to pan/zoom while in THAT vp, then acad will swtich to paperspace perform the zoom/pan operation and then switch back to the vp. In addition, if you have something selected and you attempt to do this zoom/pan, the item(s) will be deselected.
The reason for the second part of that: acad can't switch between paperspace to modelspace while a selection set is active.

Hello all. Thank you for the replays thus far!
None of the posted possibilities has solved the issue as of yet. The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was set AutoCAD back to default settings. I have the same settings that were used in the 2012 version and some of these are necessary due to the network environment we are in here at work. I imported the settings from 2012 using the "wizard" upon install.
I do see that panning and zooming switches from model to paper space but it should switch back. However, it doesn't always. My viewports are locked as your screen shot shows as once the viewport is set and scaled etc. we don't want them to change while working in the drawing. I have experienced items selected being "deselected" after zooming or panning but that doesn't happen all the time. Actually, most of the time they stay selected during that operation...?
I'm thinking I will see if there is an updated graphics driver available as see if that make a difference. But I think the system is running the latest already.
And just for reference the computer is an HP Z800 with 12GB of RAM, an NVIDIA Quadro 2000, Direct-X 10, a single Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz, & Windows 7 64 bit.
Hi all.
So I have been experiencing this issue quite a bit again. Using 2015 now. Nothing else has been changed. Sometime this happens multiple times in a row and then not again for another hour. But it is really starting to effect production.
Anyone have any new thoughts? Thanks
pendean,
Thank you for your time. The PC is an HP Z800 with Windows 7, 2.4GHz E5620 processor, SSD, 12GB ram, Quatro 2000 graphics card. All windows updates and latest drivers.
So yes, I'll be in the viewport but in model space and after panning I'm suddenly in paperspace. If I've had object's selected the selection is gone (as was mentioned before. However, I'm not sure the described scenario is exactly correct because I think everyone that uses Cad has to select objects and pan (done it for years) so... I'm not buying it 😉 )
I'm glad you have asked about replicating the issue. It is actually hard to even know exactly what is causing it or what is happening to be more accurate. It happens with panning mostly it seems and with zooming sometimes too. Or maybe it is just that I pan much more than zoom...? I press the scroll wheel to pan usually after having selected some object that needs to be relocated etc. By using the scroll wheel I'm using the cursor to pan so it is moving opposite to the area I'm wanting to see. Thus it is not at the bottom of the screen.
This particular file has 10 xrefs which is a bit high for our normal work and too more nested within those (so 12 total). However, it is a simple job really. The files size is only about 1.8 Mb.
There is another person here in the office that has experienced this some as well but not as much as I have.
I have brainstormed quite a bit about this. Maybe I should try another mouse?
OK so a bit more to think about. The other user has an older HP xw8600 with Windows 8 also with all windows updates, a different graphics card then mine but not sure what (older even).
This issue has happened in multiple projects/files that are not related to one another.
Thanks
Thank you for the help pendean.
To be clear I'm 99.9% writing about my own experience here. I did mention another user in the office who has experienced this but not as much as myself and only to show it doesn't seem isolated to just my system.
I have never used the VPMAX or VPMIN commands. 😉 I will look into them and see if it is something that would help me out in the future though. So I guess I'm only in a floating viewport as you called it. Usually if I'm working in an 1/8"th scale plan (doing MEP work here) I'll have a layout tab with a border and the viewports desired within the border. Maybe only one if it is a large space or a few if it is smaller or too big. Depends on the job of course and we also might use 1/4" scale plans/viewports etc. So lets say I'm placing some electrical outlet blocks on the drawing. I might grab the first one from the pallet and place it. Then I'll zoom and pan to where I can see the one just place as well as maybe where the next is to be. So might do a copy command at that point and place the second one. While still in the copy command I will pan to the next outlet location and place it. This continues till the outlets are all placed for the space. During this operation as I'm panning or zooming around the viewport AutoCAD will switch to paperspace and out of the viewport.
This is not the result of clicking outside of the viewport and into paperspace. This first started when I switched to 2014 and now has continued into the 2015 version. The graphics driver that I have is the driver that Autodesk recommended for my card.
Haha. IDK. I have been using AutoCad for about 3 years and no one I know (others in the office) does as you describe. We lock our viewports in the properties so that the "view" into model space does not change (move, zoom, etc.) but we work in the viewport since there are layers we don't desire in all pages/views/viewports however you want to describe them. We could work in model space but then would have to use the layer state manager and since these need to be done in the viewports for the printed documents that would seem to be doing twice the work.
This issue has been solved. It was in fact a bad scroll wheel/middle button of the mouse. I replaced the mouse about one month ago and have not had the issue since! I also asked another user in the office to give the mouse a try to see if that would cause them to experienced the switching into paper space problem and it did.
I thank everyone that attempted to help with the mystery. It was very much appreciated! Also, I realize there are many ways to draft or work within AutoCAD no one way is correct!
This issue was very distracting and at times caused much loss of productivity. I never had an issue with any other program due to the malfunction of the mouse but I think that is more because of the nature of CAD work. I hope posing this solution helps someone else down the line!
