Point Clouds support

Point Clouds support

Workshop VR does not support point clouds. Autodesk competitors have VR apps that can do it. It would be a big benefit if this functionality could be added.

Thanks for calling this out. Point cloud support is something we’re interested in continuing to understand and explore better workflows.

To help understand your needs, we’d love a bit more context on how you work today:

  • Are you working with point clouds in Autodesk ReCap or another tool today?
  • Would a point cloud → mesh workflow be sufficient, or do you need to interact directly with the raw data? Why or why not?

Any additional detail you can share about current work or goals would be appreciated.

@sam.al-mutawa Hi, thanks for asking!
We work with point clouds in some brownfield projects. Traditionally this means we had a 3D model of our project federated in Navisworks in NWD format, where we appended a point cloud exported from ReCap. Now we're shifting to ACC + WorkshopXR and it's not possible to recreate that workflow in these tools. ACC can view independent point cloud files exported from ReCap, but will not show them inside an NWD. WokrshopXR can't display any form of point cloud whatsoever.

So to answer your second question - point cloud to mesh would be sufficient so we could view it in ACC or in WorkshopXR. Raw data is not something we typically get in our point clouds.

@pawel_pietraczykU2SXU This is really helpful, thanks for the added detail.

We understand some of the challenges you’ve outlined in maintaining compatibility with your existing workflows, particularly as you incorporate Workshop XR cloud based workflows. It’s also helpful to know that a point cloud → mesh approach would meet your needs.

Appreciate you sharing this context and the brownfield use case - it helps us better understand the gaps and where improvements could have the most impact.
