Vred on Amazon AWS

Hi guys,

i’m testing some application of Vred on a g4dn AWS instance with 1 Nvidia T4.

Raytracing is working on the GPU, but I can’t activate the standard OpenGL rendering, like no GPU is installed.

The drivers are installed, and everything seems to be ok on windows, but in the log file Vred rite that is using the standard OpenGL from Microsoft... that means no OpenGL...

anyone have tested this? Do I have to setup something special?

From my experience with our own RTX Server this is normal as these kind of GPUs are running in compute mode per default and therefore don´t support OpenGL. I guess there is a way to switch them to graphics mode  (maybe like this: https://docs.nvidia.com/grid/latest/grid-gpumodeswitch-user-guide/index.html)  but I guess you need to be a system administrator do do this.

Hmm I do not have an issue here with it connecting to a g4dn instance and running vred. Able to turn off raytracing and be in opengl.

Are you launching an instance with a pre defined AMI? Or just a standard windows os and just picking a g4dn instance?

You are best loading from a pre defined nvidia RTX workstation AMI

I think the instance has been created from a standard windows instance... in fact i had to install the nvidia drivers end many other things... I have to ask to my IT colleague.

I will try to have a new instance with a predefined AMI. Could you tell me which AMI have you used?

Hi Chris,

Go to the marketplace and search for nvidia and use one that’s called nvidia rtx virtual workstation and the os you want (presumably Windows server)

Hi all,

Coming back to this topic but with a slightly different issue.

We are working on creating a cloud workstation and testing vred. However even though we are on G4dn instance with a running Tesla T4 gpu, vred does not seem to read the GPU for GPU rendering. It is greyed out in the options. Is there a reason for this?

Please note that OpenGL runs fine.

Does vred 2022.3 require a newer driver that what is currently running on the instance?

Anyone know or tried this?

Ah never mind.

I do see this message in the Terminal on vred load.

OptiX not supported in current driver. Please install driver version 465.84 or newer

I also went and looked in the docs and see the driver version requirement:

• For Windows - NVIDIA RTX GPU with a v.471.11 or newer driver for GPU raytracing, but a 471.68 or newer is recommended for DLSS (Deep Learning Supersampling).

• For Linux - NVIDIA RTX GPU with a v.470.94 or newer driver for GPU raytracing.
