Texture project size - how it works

Hi All,

How works the project size on Planar Texture? what means the 100 size number, for example I have an image which is 240mmx440mm, and when I put it inside Vred the graphic size is always 100 x 100 or 200x200. is this like a scale? If for example it set 1000 this means that my image will be 100% bigger?

I hope that someone can help me.

Regards

Matteo

Hello Matteo,

are you using the Planar mapping type in a material?

The "Projection size" UI control in the Material Editor is in scene units (default mm), width x heigth. That is the size of the texture that is projected onto an object. Of course, the end result on the object depends on how your projection plane is oriented towards the objects and the form of the object. In an ideal scenario, projecting onto a plane geometry parallel to the projection plane, the texture will appear with that size on the plane geometry.

If the checkbox below "Keep Aspect Ratio" is activated, the size is always recalculated from the aspect ratio of the image. E.g. if your image has an aspect ratio of 2:1, and you enter a width of 200, the height is adjusted to 100. To enter custom values without that adjustment, just uncheck the checkbox before entering the values. In your example you should enter size 240, 440 if your scene is in millimeters.

Please note that the planar projection is in local coordinates of the object that the material is applied to. That means, when you scale the object that has the planar material applied, the texture will get bigger or smaller together with the object. So the size is not in world space, but in local space.

Best regards

Sinje

Hi Sinje,

Yes, I'm using planar map, but when I put this jpg file inside the Diffuse map the size still 100 x 100, but my original size is 240x440mm.

Do I need to put the correct measures in MM or I need to keep them as it is? and eventually do I need to change the parameters in order to increase the size or iis it correct as it is, in order to match the measures 240x440?

Thanks for your time.

Regards

Matteo

Hi Matteo,

can you post a screenshot of your diffuse texture settings in the Material Editor, please? And if possible, the result you get in the render window. I think then it will be easier to understand the issue.

Hi Sinje,

I did this test:

  • Created a plane in VRED with measures 240mm X 440mm
  • Applied a texture below "Diffuse" menu, Mapping Type= Planar, Repeat UV mode= Decal and projection size with measure 240x400mm.

These dimensions match 100% the plane.

I think that this is the correct way.

Thanks for the support.

Matteo
