No python scripting support in VRED Design 2019?

The product description in https://www.autodesk.com/products/vred/compare-products mentions that the "VRED Design API is read-only", and with the trial I can't seem to be able to get it to read or use my scripts in the ScriptPlugins folder, nor use the script editor or run scripts.

Additionally, it doesn't even show a link to the Python documentation in the Help menu. Is Python scripting support disabled in VRED Design 2019? What does "read-only API" even mean?

It means that if you have embedded your python code in a file with VRED Pro it can be written in VRED Design and is executed when you open your file in Design.

But even importing the very example scripts that come with VRED Design don't seem to do anything. It doesn't create an entry in the Scripts menu, you can't use the Script Editor, and you can't even type into the terminal

That's by design and that's why it is called "read-only". The script editor and terminal display existing python scripts or code, but you are not allowed to edit it in VRED Design.
