Differences in material depending on import file type

Differences in material depending on import file type.jpg

I imported FBX and WRL and JT files to one vpb, and applied same material to them.

However, despite the same material, they looked different.

I think the JT file's desired material was well reflected, and FBX and WRL seemed highly distorted.

Is there any option to eliminate or adjust this difference?

Thanks!!

The materials use object space coordinates as input so any structure will be attached to the geometry while it is moving. However, this also means that any scale transforms in the hierarchy above the object will affect how the material looks. Some applications are using different scene units by default, Maya for example uses centimeter instead of millimeter, and therefore the scene units must be converted, which is usually done by adding a scale transform on the imported root node. Usually this transform can be flushed but there are some situations where this doesn´t work (mostly when cloned geometrie is used). You might need to try to manually flush the scaling or adjust the export settings for the data you are getting so they are already exported in the correct scene unit.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your quick feedback!

I understood what you mean.

But I didn't understand the method.

Could you explain that one more time?

How can I convert the scene units of exported file or add a scale transform etc,.

Your reply will be a great help to me.

Kind regards.

When you export an FBX from Maya there is an option in the export settings where you can set the units to use. I am assuming the same is available in other applications like 3DS Max.

In VRED you can check if there is a scale on the root node of the imported file. It should have scale 1,1,1. If it doesn´t you can try to use the optimize module to flush the transform on the node.
