Can't open a 32bit Multi Layer PSD/PSB.

Hi, I can't open a;

HDR Multi Layered PSD/PSB with Render passes.

Error message I'm getting in Photoshop is " Could not complete your requests because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop"

I've tried Photoshops from 2014 to 2018 CC, same error message.

Has anyone experience this before?

Thanks,

Jake

Hello @Anonymous,

thanks for your post! Can you please try to test-render a layered PSD file with these render settings:

PSD_settings_01.JPG

  •  make sure that "tonemap HDR is unchecked
  • for a test uncheck "export alpha channel"

Doing a test render without Alpha Channel would be just a test if this maybe causes the issue. Which version of VRED do you use? In case it is not the actual version, please update VRED to the latest version.

It would be also helpful if you could upload an example layered PSD file, which you can't open in Photoshop, that I can have a look at this file!

Thanks and best regards,

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

So I've done that. Rendered with those settings turned off.

The problem persists, I have however isolated the cause of the problem.

If I render at a small resolution the PSD opens up fine.

It's when I render at UHDV (7680 x 4320 ) resolution that the file won't open. I haven't checked other resolutions as this is the size I need.

The file size is 5GB so I reaslise PSD would normally have issues. The thing is, it also happens when saved as a PSB format.

(On a separate note, I have noticed when saving a *.tif with "export alpha channel" setting turned off (not ticked), a Beauty Render Pass produces an all black image - this is a separate issue but one I'm wondering if you're across)

Due to the file size I'm not sure I can upload the PSB file. I think you may be able to reproduce this error by enabling most of the Render Passes and Rendering a ray-traced UHDV resolution image.

In the meantime I will render them as *.tif's with alpha channel turned on.

Thanks,
Jake

I should also add;

4K (4096 x 2160) 1.45Gb *.PSB File does not open

4K (4096 x 2160) 1.45Gb *.PSD File opens ok

Looks like it can only be a PSD file and less than 2Gb's (which is the PSD file size limit)

Hello @Anonymous,

thanks for the info. I did a test on my machines and I can reproduce the issue. I can't open a layered .psb file in Photoshop CC 2018, no matter which size.

I will log this to development.

Regarding the .psd - files, they can be opened instead, but are limited to 2 GB by Photoshop.

Best regards,

Patrick
