Straight skeleton for roof plan

Hi all,

I recently viewed an old post (swamp 2012) showing a cool sample by Lee Mac using "Straight Skeleton" to develop hip roof plans from selected polylines.

I know those this an outdated 2d approach, but I'm going to ask anyway...

Has anybody out there developed something similar? I have searched for a way to download and/or purchase the Lee Mac version and haven't heard back or located the program.

Also, I found an old forum post showing this cool lisp "hiproof.lsp"  that 2d and 3d options,  but the link is long broken and I cannot seem to find it either.

It is commercial but very inexpensive, would be happy to discuss.3dhouse.jpg

We are in the process of simplifying our systems back to 2d. I know, that makes many cringe but the bottom line is that when we evaluate our projects, we spend to much time messing with ACA or REVIT. We did an experiment and utilized some old lisp's I had from years ago. We used sketchup for exterior modeling, presentation graphics and vanilla autocad using autolisp for plans, sections and details. At the end we compared the profit and time taken on projects. The 2d old school methods came out way ahead. The projects are getting built without issue. All of our consultants have us send them vanilla dwg bases anyway, so that's the way were going.

I know it goes against the grain to many in the industry but...

We offer Revit and ACA as services, but if not requested, we keep it simple. The proof is in the bank. Way less training time. Way less wrestling software. Way more time spent making decisions about the actual project and not letting software rule the show.

So, I have been refining our autolisp tools and have come up with many ways to keep the cool parts of Navigator, sheet numbering, detail links, scheduling, wall, door and window cleanup etc.

I am looking for 2d autocad solutions only at this point.

Thank you for your time and consideration my friend.

Hi, @DC-MWA

I have routines that you are searching for, but they are not free... For small fee I can mail them to you if you wish, and FYI they are not perfect as reference polygonal LWPOLYLINE shape can be more or less complex... So my advice is to use my routine for creating all slope 3d lines and then if there are sufficient lines after computation you still have to manually remove some of them before you apply routine for converting 3d lines to 3DSOLID... For how they work, have look at this video (it was on net from long time ago) :

So if you are still interested, posting an E-mail to me could bring you to your goal... E-mail : ribarm@gmail.com

The code for the houses was written some 20 years ago way before Revit and before AutocadArchitectural. It is 2d based working on a floor plan, but with walls having a height, doors and windows cut the walls, the roofs take into account the height of walls. The roofs are faces so a render or hide works in a 3d view, as the house is 2D+ you just open a layout and create views for all the elevations, option in the code.

If you want DC-MWA email me one of your plans and I will recreate, sea.haven@bigpond.com.

Ps Ribarm nice 3d roof.

Thank you for your time and input

I would be interested in the 2Droof portion of your program.

Is it possible to use the 2d roof portion independently?

If yes... What would the cost be?

If you are interested this type of deal has no particular prize - it is considered as donation that can cover cost of opening international banking transaction bill (banking provision) + bonus for routines values... I left you my e-mail, so that I can send you routines for you to do testings, and when you find them useful or not - you have to decide how much you should pay... Simply those things aren't like other things on forums for free... When I get response from you on mail : ribarm@gmail.com, I will send you archive with several routines for this particular task with README.TXT file where is described what you should do and how you should approach to overcome this task in successful manner... Then I will promptly inform you on how you can make donation in another mail and that's all... I can only say that you could then resell them, but the thing is, that you should avoid such things... They are still someone's intellectual property and that wasn't the authors intentions - authors also avoid responsibilities from incorrect usages or program failures that may arise in very complex situations heavy for computational procedures and don't take responsibility of possible time elapse needed for computation - it is considered faster than manual approach, but for complexity of task owner of routines is only responsible person to determine dead line time limit needed for solving mentioned task...

DC-MWA the roof routines, multi styles of roof are part of a package, they rely on the way the walls have been drawn to work they are roof planes in 3d have z Values they are 2d objects though, the roof is put on top of the wall where it should be. The package allows you to create elevations from the plan view, hence the roofs having z's.

As I suggested send me one your floor plans dwg, and I will endeavor to recreate so you can see how it works. It will be more beneficial to have the full package than me pulling bits out. Its not expensive for what it does.

sea.haven@bigpond.com, I hope you are staying safe and healthy in these strange times. Is this routine still available? I would be interested in the 3D linework version to generate starting elevations and roof plans for 2d AutoCAD. I am also sending you and email request.

Cheers,

Steve
