Solid axis generation

I am looking for a routine to extract the centre axis of 3D solids ( beams and columns ).
Does anyone have one, please?

If it's straight and orthogonally oriented, and doesn't have irregular thingies projecting off the basic shape of it, it should be possible to calculate that from its bounding box.  If not, there's a procedure outlined >here< that could possibly be developed into something.
