.pat files

Hi,

I am wondering if a .pat file is a common file used in AutoCAD?

I work for a company that supplies materials to architects and have someone requesting a .pat file however have not dealt with this request before and need to know whether to supply a .pat file as a one off or create them for all of our products.

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to Autodesk Community.

*.pat files are used for hatch pattern.

Are you using any custom hatch pattern for your drawings ?

If you are not, I think there is no need to send the *.pat files.

Hi I am not the one doing the drawings, but I believe our product is what will be the custom hatch pattern. Is it not the .pat file that creates the custom hatch pattern?

Thanks Rebecca

Send a request to the person who created the drawing. He/She has better idea for what pat file used for that drawing.

FYI AutoCAD shipped with a pat file (actually 2 files - 1 for metric unit while another for imperial unit). There is no need to attach pat file when sending out drawing files unless a custom pat file is used.

If your company produces drawings of your products that you make available to Architects or others, and that they can use as provided, and they involve any custom Hatch pattern(s), you should not need to send the .PAT file(s) with the drawings -- the Hatch entities as drawn will be "embedded" in the drawings.  But if someone has a need to draw something themselves, differently [e.g. over a larger or differently-shaped area] from what any drawings you provide contain [such as if you make decorative perforated metal sheets and an Architect wants to detail something using one of your perforation designs], then they would need the .PAT file that defines the Hatch pattern.  In such a case, it would be in your company's interest to provide it, making it easier for them to specify your product than someone else's for which they can't get the pattern definition.

I know that you can use the Express Tools to create hatch patterns of line work. I use this program to make and edit hatch patterns from drawings frequently.  It is very easy to use and well worth the investment.

ACAD.pat is the only "PAT" file that allows multiple patterns
to be defined inside the file. For all other PAT files, they are
"stand alone" files with the pattern name the same as the file name.

With that said, it is possible to copy-clip/paste a custom pattern
into the ACAD.pat file. If you cannot find the stand alone, then it is
possible it is inside the ACAD.pat file where you can copy-clip out
the questionable section and create a stand alone for purposes of
transmitting to the destination party.

Hatch pattern collections are made available by manufacturers as a service to their existing and prospective customers who wish to show the product in drawings.

A number of these can be found among the collections referred to here:
