attach a material to a layer via keyboard entry

I find working with the material dialogue cumbersome and prefer to set up a tool with a script that attaches the material to the layer via the -layer command. I run into a problem because I don't know where the material definitions are. The -layer command won't accept .jpg or .png as material definitions. Can anyone help?

I just found your post today and wanted to see if you had mad any progress on creating method to add a material to a layer manually.  From your post it actually sounds as if you are also trying to create a material on the fly and then assign it. I am not sure that this can be done out-of -the box.  I will move this thread to the Customization forum to see if anyone there has some ideas for you.
