Assign Name to Numbered color in Autocad Color Index (ACI)

Hello,

The first seven colors in the ACI are named (red, yellow, green, etc). They are also associated with an index number (red=1, yellow=2, green=3, etc). So, if I want to change the color of an object or layer, I can type in "red" or "1" in the "Select Color" dialog box and get the same result (see photo).

Is there a way to assign a name to colors 8-255? Obviously, I wouldn't do ALL of those colors. But maybe just a few more that I commonly use, such as color 8. I could name that to "Gray."

Is there a way to do this?

I don't think there's a way to do that in the dialog box.  You could do it in something like an AutoLisp routine for assigning colors, using something like a list associating your names with the appropriate index numbers, or even with TrueColor values.

[But who says color 8 should be "Gray," when there are numerous shades of gray in the system?]

Gotcha, so in other words, there is no text file stored somewhere on my computer that I can go in and edit that stores the information for these colors?

(I am ignoring your comment and any further comments on how the colors should/shouldn't be named - waste of time)

The 1-8 colors are more than likely a hang up from the days of drafting ink pens the color indicated its thickness, we used those 1-8 as implied for thickness, you have to remember that Autocad started back in the days of manual drafting. Some stuff is still in Autocad from day 1 but is really not needed anymore. Some functions have been removed same as colors using names may 1 day be removed.

and since there is no known names for colors 8 & 9 that should tell you which section is correct
