How many pieces there are in a region?

If I have many regions on the screen, and some of them consist of more than one piece, is there a way to distinguish them from one-piece regions so that I can explode them?
Humm, more explanation!
Let's say I have a rectangle, I subtract a circle form the middle of it, now I am left with a two-piece object (remaining of the rectangle). Now if I explode this, I would end up having two regions, which is fine. The problem is if the remaining rectangle wasn't a two-piece object, i.e. it was a one-piece object, exploding it would demolish the region into it's consisting elements (lines and curves). So my question is, how could I tell if the region has more than one piece or it doesn't?
