Is there a way to access the custom drawing properties? In Excel it is
straight forward with CustomDocumentProperties but I am having trouble
finding a simular property in Acad.

What is it exactly that the CustomDocumentProperties object does in Excel?

If it already exists, you can access the DWGPROPS cookie as a dictionary:

Dim props As Dictionary
Set props = ThisDrawing.Dictionaries("DWGPROPS")

If it doesn't already exist, you'll have to jump through some hoops since
DWGPROPS is actually an Xrecord appended directly to the NOD (named object
dictionary), which is something you can't do in VBA. If you can't come up with
any other solution, have a look at the PropManager class of vbXtender (Downloads
section of my site). It's free, documented and easy to use. Even so, if you have
any questions, feel free to contact me through my site.

Jason, I believe Custom Properties are application specific. Microsoft
handles them one way and AutoDesk handles them another way. There are some
posts under "DwgProps" search that you may find informative. The latest
AutoDesk control that I have been using is acaddpxctl.oca, DwgProps, and
DwgPreview.
