Vault to open Inventor DWG file in Inventor, not AutoCAD

Vault to open Inventor DWG file in Inventor, not AutoCAD

Simple request: for Vault to know that an Inventor DWG is opened in Inventor and an AutoCAD DWG is opened in AutoCAD.

Vault nows that an IDW is an Inventor file so a double clock or RMB and Open does just than in the correct application. Doing either of these on an Inventor DWG file openes it in AutoCAD. This forces the user to get the DWG locally and open it locally.

Did a quick search and found nothing to help me on this.

I recently got the same problem, it has never been an issue before, but now all my Inventor .dwg opens in ACad. Have you found a solution?

Hi Brendan,

i'm not able to reproduce the issue while RMB or double click an Inventor dwg and open in AutoCAD. Could you give me more information regarding the issue? What is the Vault edition and version being used?

Regards,

CheeKit

If I RMB and open and Inventor DWG file in Vault 2016, it opens in Autocad.

You can see in the first pic below that it is an Inventor DWG file. Second pic shows it opening in Autocad.

Thanks Brendan. Your information give me some clue, will look into this issue further.

From the pic, the Provider value is Inventor DWG, what is the value for Classification? This would determine how we could fix this case.

Hi Brendan,

There is one settings inside Connectivity.VaultPro.exe.config (by default at C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Vault Professional 2016\Explorer) that control the logic how dwg would be opened. Maybe this is causing the issue. The Inventor openExtensionHandler Priority value should be lower than AutoCAD as shown in the pic below.

It already is a lower value.

Could you try setting the priority value to "0" for Inventor? Restart Vault client before open the Inventor dwg.

Thanks,

CheeKit

Hi CheeKit.

Still opens in AutoCAD after chaning the value for Inventor to 0.

With the help from Brendan, the workaround is to set the default Open with: to "AutoCAD DWG Launcher" as shown in the pic below. This is how Open dwg files from Vault client behavior when the specific CAD application is unable to detect for various reasons, and fallback to default program configured in the Windows OS.

There are 17 votes, can you reply whether this workaround is working or not working? At the same time, i'm looking for ways to reproduce this issue. Any information please post back.

Thanks,

CheeKit

I believe to Use AutoCAD DWG Launcher as default for DWG file is the correct procedure - this is not a workaround.
