Copy Design - Rules

Copy Design - Rules

As the adoption of the new powerful copy design grows, the requirements to use rules increase in parallel. I am seeing more tasks that easily could be solved if we allow to set any selectable UDP to a configurable, custom value. E.g. set a UDP DocSubType to "Inspection Drawing" to trigger an existing rule to be applied for the new file. Ideally the target value (pulldown list currently) also offers the selection of existing or new UDPs to transfer values.

Vote if you agree and add other use cases that I did not mention.

Thanks,

Markus

It would be nice if you could be able to set the value to either a property within Inventor, or a custom field you can type a charcter in, or be able to set a custom macro definition as a value.

This is for Vault 2016 Copy Design

When working inside the Copy Design window, it would be very helpful to have the ability to edit User Defined Properties on files marked as "Copy".  We have Standard Assemblies that we utilize for our customer specific and we have a UDP that matches our ERP system.

Currently the best we can do with a Rule Set on UDP's is:

  • Reset the UDP Value
  • Set to Username
  • Set to Blank

When you are copying an assembly with sub assemblies and files across multiple Vault folders, none of those are really great choices.  It would then force the user to remember exactly what files in what folders they replaced in a given assembly and step through the Vault folder structure to correct the UDP's.

If we can customize how the view in Copy Design looks, why not have the ability to edit the properties we display?

I would like to be able to change a .ipt or .iam description and other property fields while doing a copy design. Being able to add a custom iProperty would be nice too. I can add the column for properties, but it is not editable. This would make it much easier to update descriptions on a large batch of files.

Hi Markus,

Thanks for already posting this idea, saved me some effort. Smiley Wink

We are in the middle of a Vault Professional (2016) implementation and we are running into a cumbersome situation with copying assemblies and drawings to other Categories using Copy Design (2.0). Our current workflow is to copy the assembly and reset the Category to Base using a Rule Set. After the Copy Design action we have to manually change the assembly to the desired Category. To get the assembly into the right Item Category, we also have to manually change a specific User Defined Property, so that the Assign Item command puts the items in the right Category based on the Item Category assignment rules.

If we would be able to set file properties to a custom value in the Copy Design Rule Sets, then Category assignment rules for both files and items can do their job based on this UDP. And no further manual action will be needed.

Kind regards,

Alain

We're still on Vault 2016 but I din't see this feature in the 'what's new 2018'. Is this correct?

It would be such a usefull and much needed feature.

I think this idea deals with the same issue: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault-ideas/copy-design-rules/idi-p/5958059

This idea seems to be a duplicate of: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault-ideas/copy-design-rules/idc-p/7190632#M4849

That idea was submitted by an Autodesk employee.

This would be very nice to be able to set up the rule set to any number of different configurations based on values that you want Copy Design to change for you. We have set up a custom rules set, but it is very limited on selections.

We have another version of Vault 2019 and the topic is still not resolved. When will it be possible to edit iProperties when copying?

The benefit to edit properties on the fly in copy design would give us a huge increase in productivity. We start almost every file from a copy design and then have to complete it just to go into edit properties and set everything the way we need it.

Worst tool ever.

tbergen  -  it is a pretty decent tool if you actually learned how to use it. There is definitely room for improvements though.

@Anonymous , can you tell me why you feel it is the worst tool ever?

Hello,

It would be very easy to add the ability to edit properties when copying. This is an important function because it facilitates changing the properties at the copying stage. Changing the property by attaching a rule is cumbersome.

4 years and nothing is done about this topic. Writing new ideas that nobody pays attention to.
