Vault Problem - Please help!

In an effort to get our Vault server running more efficiently, we had our IT support group demote our Vault server from a backup domain controller to a member server.  In doing so, we can now no longer connect to the Vault server. "Autodesk Vault could not find the Data Management Services on xxx.xxx.xx.x".

The server was demoted last night prior to the scheduled backup running.  Unfortunately the backup never ran after the server was demoted and rebooted so my latest backup is from two nights ago.  No Vlog is being created so I cannot research errors.  I am trying to run a manual backup now.

All required Vault services are running.  I have restarted IIS, but no luck.

Please help!  What can I do to get this running again?

TIA!

Hi There

Has the IP Address or the server name chaned at all. If the ip address has changed try using IP address rather then server name for the server name.

If the server name has changed you may have a few more headaches. There are a few posts on server name changes, The one here is for server 2009, and SQL 2005.

http://crackingthevault.typepad.com/crackingthevault/2010/02/how-to-update-vault-with-the-new-server...

Hope it helps in some way.

Regards,

Dull_Blades,

I believe you will be having two issues here – both related to the the dcpromo.

For IIS, If I recall correctly, you will need to correct the user set for anonymous access inside of IIS.  Attempting to browse to http://%ServerName% with Show Friendly HTTP error messages off should help in verifying – though it may be easier to remove IIS and re-add.

SQL will also have some problems.  From  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506%28v=SQL.100%29.aspx#DC_Support

·  After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain controller to a domain member. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain member.

Please post your results when trying to browse to http://%servername% with Show Friendly HTTP error messages off.

Hi Brett!

Thanks for the advice!  The server IP address is still the same as is the server name.  All that was done was a dcpromo command on the server to demote it.  Not one sigle other thing was changed.

I am also unable to create a manual backup.  After trying to create a manual backup of the database through the console, It keeps hanging.  I checked the event log and an error was displayed that says:

"BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE Encon Documentation. Check the backup application log for detailed messages."

I opend a web browser and pasted the following address in as I have seen this recommended in other threads. I get the error below.  I have seen this mentioned in a couple of other threads, so I will now try to investigate this error.  I assume this may have something to do with permissions of the current login?  I am logged into the server with the same admin account I have always used.  Maybe the permissions were somehow deleted when the server was demoted?

http://localhost/AutodeskDM/Services/SecurityService.asmx

Andy,

Thanks for the tips.  I will attempt this and let you know the results.

I too found that statement about not demoting a domain controller after SQL has been installed... unfortunately, it wasn't until after we demoted it! 🙂 hehe

Results of browsing to the server name with Show Friendly HTTP error messages off:

Under Construction

The site you are trying to view does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded and configured.

Please try this site again later. If you still experience the problem, try contacting the Web site administrator.

If you are the Web site administrator and feel you have received this message in error, please see "Enabling and Disabling Dynamic Content" in IIS Help.

To access IIS Help

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open text box, type inetmgr. IIS Manager appears.
  3. From the Help menu, click Help Topics.
  4. Click Internet Information Services.

Lets focus on the above first:

HTTP Error 401.3 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to an ACL set on the requested resource.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

The AutodeskDM website should point to (default) C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\ADMS 2012\Server\Web.  Please make sure the user set in IIS has access to this path.

I believe the default security information for IIS is located here: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=812614

Does http://localhost/AutodeskDM/Services/SecurityService.asmx open correctly now in IE?  Or does it still display the 401.3 error?

If it opens correctly, IIS may be all set - the next hurdle will be SQL.

if it does not open correctly, you can either setup procmon (procmon.exe from live.sysinternals.com) to identify what user is generating the error - or - remove IIS and re-add and repair the Vault Server 2012 installation.

Still opens with the 401.3 error.

I think reinstalling IIS will be the easiest route to take.

Will uninstalling IIS and running a repair on the Vault Server Installation keep my current database intact?

Correct - installing / removing IIS and the Vault Server application makes no changes to you current data.

As long as you still have your KnowledgeVaultMaster MDF/LDF and %VaultName% MDF/LDF files and the cooresponding filestore, you data is intact.

Andy,

Thank you so much for all of your help!  I have uninstalled IIS and will re-install it tomorrow.  I have also successfully run the repair tool on the Vault Server.  I am now trying to run a manual backup.

I will post an update once I get IIS going again.

Thanks again!

No problem.

You will want to run the repair / reinstall install after IIS is put back on the machine.

Andy,

I have re-installed IIS sucessfully, repaired the Vault Server Installation and rebooted the server.  Still not able to connect.

I opened IIS Manager and noticed that the AutodeskDM web site is no longer in IIS.  Should that not have been added back when I did the Vault Server repair after I reinstalled IIS?

Not sure where to go from here.

Any more ideas?

TIA

Hmmm... after thinking about this... I re-installed IIS, then did the Vault Server repair then rebooted the server.  Maybe I should have rebooted right after IIS re-install?  I will try to run the Vault Server repair again.

Ran the Vault Server diagnostics tool.  Came up with two errors... ASP filter error and an HTTP static error.

Corrected the problem with ASP filters, but still have an http static issue.  Attempting one more server reboot since the ASP change and then another Vault Server repair.

What OS is the server?

Please make sure that IIS has the nessisary roles (screen shots here on the wiki)

http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Vault/enu/2012/Help/03._Installation_and_Configuration/Vault_2012_Advan...

If you install the three precheck files (by running TestASPNet.msi from %Media%\x86\en-us\edmPrechecks\) can you manually browse to the Static TXT file in IE without issue?

The OS is Windows Server 2003 x64

I don't see any configuration options in the wiki for IIS 6.0 (that is what we are using).

I will install the prechecks and let you know what I find.

Andy,

I installed the precheck tools, but not sure exactly what you mean by manually browse to the Static TXT file.

I am now getting the "Under Construction" page when I browse to http://localhost/

I still do not understand why the AutodeskDM website does not show in IIS (see attached image).

Any other ideas?  It seems that if I now have the Under Construction page, that we are getting closer???

Thank you for the screen shot - Based on my 2k3 Server, no further IIS roles should be required from the OS.

There will be 1 or 2 more steps we will want to do to make sure that IIS is OK - if IIS is not set for 32 bit and missing the Web Service Extension for .NET 2.0 (Can be verified in IIS - see attached image)

if it is not listed, please run teh following commands from the command prompt:

cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

%SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i

IISRESET

Then inside of the IIS manager, please set the ASPNET 2 to be allowed.

Running the repair installation of the vault server through add/remove programs should re-create the AutodeskDM virtual directory.
