Vault Backup Error message

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello

Im presenting this issue

Issue:

When you try to restore a Vault backup, the following error message is displayed:

Restore failed because the backup has products that are not supported by the server

Causes:

This error can occur for the following reasons:

  • Product update was applied to the backup server, but hasn’t been applied to the restoring server.
  • Backup was created in higher version of Vault than the restoring server. (For example, the backup was created in Vault Professional, and you are restoring in Vault "basic.")
  • Backup was created in a newer release than the restoring server. (For example, the backup was created in Vault 2014, and you are restoring in Vault 2013.)

Solution:

Try the following solutions:

  1. Ensure the update, service pack, or hotfix of the backup server matches the restoring server.
  2. Ensure the Vault version and product match.
  3. Ensure the Vault releases match.

Can you give me more information about the solution part

On

1 do you mean the SQL Version that im running???

2 how can I compare the version that I have, I open the backupcontent.XML file and I have this

- <Products>
<Product Name="Autodesk.Productstream" Version="17.2.9.0" />
<Product Name="Autodesk.Vault" Version="17.2.9.0" />
<Product Name="Autodesk.VaultCollaboration" Version="17.2.9.0" />
<Product Name="Autodesk.VaultPro" Version="17.2.9.0" />
</Products>

Where can I compare this or how should I know what is the version of vault that im running?? The vault I have is the Vault 2013 (ADMS)

3 how can I see the release that I have

Here is the thing im working on a project of upgrade to version 2015 of vault, but we want to do the backup into a VM, right now I have a backup with the content  that I provide above, and this backup was made by another person which I no longer have communication, and since of that I do not know where he did this back up under what version of vault with what SQL version I do not know nothing about this, and I did a restore on vault 2015 but I have an error message saying that my backup is not compatible, so right now I downgrade to version 2013 and SQL R1 SP1 to do a restore and then upgrade to SQL R2 to do a backup again and then restore it into a vault 2015 version but I have this error when I try to do the restore, can you help me out to see what I need to update if is my sql or if I need to update downgrade vault, please help

Regards!

Nope you're not crazy. you've just installed your SQL instance wrong haha

You've called the instance AUTODESKVAULTTE... (as shown in the instance ID bit)

The instance MUST be called AUTODESKVAULT.

As it's letting you restore, I'm now assuming you have ended up with multiple different SQL versions on your VM and one of them has a correctly installed instance.  You're going to have to uninstall the AUTODESKVAULT instance which you have in SQL 2008 SP3.

To be honest, if I was you, I'd just wipe the bloody VM and start again from a fresh build now that you know what to do Smiley LOL

So that dialog tells me that you are restoring to SQL Express and that your database (most likely Vault) is larger than the 10 GB single database size restriciton in SQL Express.

So couple of options:

You can perform an edition upgrade on the SQL instance on this VM to a higher level to perform the restore.

You can examine the database from your 2013 environment - per the Advanced Config Guide, check the database's recovery model.  If it is set to full, you can set it to simple ad re-create your backup.  I believe this should reduce the size somewhat which may allow you to restore the backup to your new environment for 2015.

Of course if the database is significantly larger than 10 GB (lets say, you check your databases folder in the backup and the vault_dbbak file is 35 GB, chagign the recovery model [if applicable] won't help at all)

I guess I am unsure why the instance update cannot be done - this would be updating the SQL instance from Express to Standard - completly seperate from vault.  This provides the ability to host a single database larger than 10 GB.  This would be done before performing the restore command from ADMS console.

but if i do that, the version of my instance is going to be udpated right? like the version number? i got 10.52.4000.0 if i update it does that is gonna change?? because the vault is not gonna let me restore if the instance version change, that was my main problem

No, the version number will not change when doing an instance upgrade. The version number will increase if you install additional hotfixes or service packs, or upgrade to a different release all together (2008 -> 2008 R2 -> 2012 -> 2014.)

Does that help clarify?

SQL 2008 R2 Standard edition with service pack 2 will maintain your version (build) of 10.50.4000.

Instructions on performing a SQL Server Edition upgrade (moving from SQL Express to SQL Standard) ca...

For the 2015 Vault product line, you also have the option of running SQL 2012 (SP1) which would be build number 11.0.3000.

sorry i dont quite understand, the express edition is the one i have, the standar edition is another one?? or is the same, im trying to found it i only found the std edition with sp1 but is only a folder with a configuration file, im trying to do what the lin saids but i dont have the screen where you select the edition you want to upgrade, i think i need to change the path of the installation media root directory or something like that, by the other hand, they dont allow me to change the edition on my company because is supposed that we are using the express edition but anyway im doing this under a vm and they told me that the other option is to get another backup but i think is goint to be the same issue since that theyre gonna be made on the same SQL Server Edition which is the 2008 R2 Express, in according the link that you sent me im going to update only the instance right? or i need to update the edition on my vm?? because as i understand it would be only on that instance and not the entire vm, sorry be pacient with me

It is ok - I will try to explain further.

Yes, from the screen shots provided, your current VM is running SQL Express edition.  (Express edition has a limit on how large a single database can be).  From the error screen shot, the backup you have includes a database that is LARGER than the size that SQL Express edition allows.  This leads me to believe that the SQL edition that was installed in the 2013 environment was SQL Standard (or higher), which allowed the database to be larger than 10 GB.

I am unsure what you mean by changing the path of the installation media, but perhalps you are just referring to where to begin setup for a higher-tier SQL in order to upgrade your existing?

Obtaining another backup will not help in this case, in my opinion, since the database is already larger than what SQL Express edition supports (10 GB).  The options would be to review the database settings to see if there is a way to reduce its size (database recovery model for example).

And correct, you would only be upgrading the instance on your VM where you are trying to restore the vault backup to.

The backup itself will not have a password created / set during the backup task. It will be the user credentials that were valid at the time of creating the backup...

IE, my user is Andy and password is ABC123.

I then create a backup.

I then change my password for Andy to be XYZ789.

I then restore my previous backup and are presented with a login dialog.

I need to enter Andy / ABC123 because those were my credentials at the time the backup was created.

Make sense?

Ah - ok! I didnt want to make that assumption.

If the administrator password is unknown, it can be reset by working with our support team.

I will escalate this thread for a member of the team to assist you in this.

Another option would be to login with another account with the administrative role and then reset the administrator password from inside the application.
