Vault 2017 launching multple sessions of Inventor

Hello,

I upgraded the vault pro client from 2015 to 2017, and although the installation went well, I am seeing different behavior…

In 2015, when I RMB on an Inventor file in Vault, and select Open, 2 things may happen. If Inventor is not running, it will automatically launch and open the file. If a session of Inventor is running, the file will open.

In 2017, the same workflow will launch a new instance of Inventor, regardless of whether or not a session is active, leading to multiple active sessions.

Where in vault is this behavior controlled?

Thanks.

This control is based on Windows..  IF you did the same thing through Windows Explorer you would see the same results.

Is Inventor at 2015 still or been upgraded to 2017?

There are a few registry changes you can check/change, but lately those are correct and people are forced to run the Inventor reset utility (link is in my signature).

Update:  Before you run the Inventor reset utility let me know what version of Inventor you are currently using with Vault 2017.

No, actually, that is not true.

With Inventor running, I tested it by opeing a file directly from Windows Explorer, and a new Inventor session was not launched.

OK..

I'm not sure what configuration you have on your machine since you didn't indicated what version of Inventor you're using, but review this article.

Sorry about not including versions: Vault Pro 2017 & PDSU2017.

I went through that artical already, as well possible registry fixes. I am currently uninstalling and reinstalling Vault as there are other issues cropping up.

Hopefully that will fix everything.

Thanks.

I believe what is happening is Vault Explorer memorizes a name for Inventor (or GUID, or Name and Version).  Windows may be aware that you updated Inventor to a new build, but Vault Explorer didn't get the memo, so it's open method skips over your existing running Inventor because Inventor didn't respond to "is there any program named xxx out there", and Vault was forced to Open a new program.  That is a conversational simplification, in reality its much uglier.  If I could find a way to reset Vault's program cache, I bet we could fix without reinstalling.

This started happening again. The strange thing this time, is that all of the Inventor drawing icons were replaced by the application icon:

They appear this way in both Windoze and Vault.

Hi Mark,

I have two computers at our Poland facility that are running Inventor/Vault Pro 2017.  When they open files in Vault, it will open multiple sessions of Inventor.  When they open from Windows Explorer it opens files to a single session of Inventor.  I had them check the registry for Inventor open settings and everything looks good.  Any idea what could be going on here?

Usually when Vault opens multi-sessions of Inventor, Windows would be doing the same thing too..  Smiley Wink   Never seen when Vault works one way, Windows does something else..   Here's my suggestion (on one machine).

1.  Run the Inventor reset utility.  Test it again.

2.  If item #1 doesn't work.   Uninstall an reinstall the Vault client.

Good luck and report back on your progress.

Thanks Mark,

I'm trying to get them to just upgrade to Inventor/Vault Pro 2018.  I'm going to try to uninstall Vault and reinstall first and see what happens.

Thanks!
