Update existing Item with new property.

We recently created a couple of new file properties.

The properties are mapped and assigned correctly to their respective categories.

All new Items populate with the properties as expected.

The issue we have is updating existing Items with the new properties. Even after the new properties have been added to the file.

The only way we have been able to populate an existing item is to manually add the property to the item.

Our thinking was that an Item would show the new properties after being updated, but It isn't working that way.

Is there an easier way to get the property in the Item without adding it manually to each Item?

Try selecting all of the Items in the Item Master grid that need the properties. Then in the Actions menu select Add or Remove Property. Add the missing properties and all of the selected Items should get updated.

That does the job much better than one at a time.

We would eventually need to add the properties to all of our Items. There are only around 170,000 total.

I would like to preemptively add the property to the Item. This would ensure the Item is prepared when or if the file property is updated with a value.

This would of course need to be done in batches based on our criteria.

I realize everyone's system and resources are different, but do you have any recommendations?

Limitations? How many Items at a time?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, you will have to see how updating small batches at a time will affect your server. Slowly increase the batch file to see if users are seeing a performance issue. Once you have that limit, back down until it is an acceptable amount.

We face the same issue, and there are others:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault-forum/add-existing-property-to-existing-content-center-item-in-...

The proposed solution is labour-intensive, for our >350.000 items.

Updating the "Assign/Update item"-functionality would automatically distribute filled-in property into the item, when synchronized. Therefore I created this IdeaStation entry today:
