restoring 2014 backup to 2016 Vault Server Pro

Hello,

I am having a trouble restoring 2014 Vault backup.

We are upgrading 2014 Vault to 2016 Version. Below are the steps have been done so far:

1. I've created a backup from 2014 vault and copied it to the new server where ADMS console to be installed.
2. We also setup a new MS SQL server on a different server (vrdw-150-99), therefore MS SQL is located on one server and ADMS 2016 (to be installed) is located on another server.
3. I've created a shared network folder on MS SQL server called ADSKVault_transition
4. I've installed ADMS console by expanding the triangle and entering the following:
5. remote database: vrdw-150-99
6. required network share: \\vrdw-150-99\adskvault_transition
7. ADMS Vault Server was installed
8. then I tried to restore from the backup entered the following:
9. backup location: f:\VaultBackup_2020_03_08_8_00_28_PM
10. database data location: default
11. restore location: f:\Vault_Restore_Location\file_store

After that I received the following error: "Illegal pathname or filename '\\vrdw-150-099\adskvault_transition''

What did I do wrong? Please help.

Hello,

Please check if you have required permissions on the shared folder.

Yes, I have read/write permissions on the MS SQL server. I've created a user svcAutodeskVaultDEV and shared the network drive with this user.

something just occurred to me and maybe this is critical.

I login with my own admin account user name to restore the Vault but the transition folder is shared with generic admin account user name svcAutodeskVaultDEV. Do you think I need to restore vault using svcAutodeskVaultDEV user login?

or grant your admin user access to the folder.

Is this service account also the impersonation user during setup of Vault 2016 (which is - on a side note - no supported as the latest version is 2021  and we do support current -3)

My admin account is listed as an owner for this shared drive. I just checked. I have admin rights on the SQL server. I created this share and added impersonation account.

yes. I used this impersonation account to setup vault 2016. 

This is the first step in our upgrade path. We are upgrading 2014 to 2019 (2014-->2016-->2018-->2019)

So this svc user is a domain user?
Can you check on the ADMS Console in 2016 what is set for impersonation account there?

where would I find this setting. I opened ADMS console but don't see it

yes. it is a domain user. Do I open User Manager-->Import Domain User?

Configure the impersonation credentials for a Vault Server.

1. Select Tools   Administration.
2. In the Administration dialog box, select the Advanced Settings tab.
3. Click Settings.
4. Enter the user name for the impersonation account.
5. Enter the password for the user account. The user name and password that are entered must be a pre-existing local Microsoft Windows user or domain user.

OK. I see it! but the user name is vrdw-40-091\svcAutodeskVaultDev which is not what I entered when setting up vault. it should be the new server name. What do I do?

I would assume "vrdw-40-091" is not your domain and not the user you set into your share.

So change the user in that dialogue to DOMAINNAME\svcAutodeskVaultDev and retry

Should I enter vrdw-150-99\svcAutodeskVaultDev or as you said domainname\ svcAutodeskVaultDev?
If not, where would I find domain name? my admin account has corp\ in front of it would corp\be domain name?

how did you set up the share permission for the generic service account?

should I try using corp as a domain name? I can also try to recreate share and see how it connects and what domain name is being used?

vrdw-40-091 is the dev server where ADMS 2016 is installed

Create the share on the ADMS server instead of the SQL server and give local group vrdw-40-091\users read/write access to the share and folder security.

I changed DOMAINNAME to CORP and will try to restore. I am getting a message that restore operation will delete current datasets and file stores. Since my backup came from the Production Vault should I be worried? Will Production 2014 Vault will stay intact?
