Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Autodesk Community, and thank you for posting your question here in the Vault forum!

Before upgrading a Vault Server, please make sure you have a full Vault backup by opening the ADMS Console and selecting Tools > Backup and restore.

Since you are running into issues doing an in-place upgrade of the Vault Server from Vault 2014 to 2016, what OS are you using?

Two options, the first option is to set up a new server with supported OS and pre-install Vault 2016 and all of the updates. Then you would be able to restore the 2014 Vault backup.

The other option is you could try to uninstall Vault 2014 yourself through the program and features option in the control panel. Then you could install Vault 2016 as you will not run into the uninstall error in the install logs. If you cannot uninstall Vault 2014 through the control panel your next step would be to copy the vault backup off the computer and format the server. This way is far faster than trying to manual uninstall and delete all the files and registry keys for Vault. I would not try to using the windows fix it tool as it does not clear out all of the registry keys for vault and will cause unsupported errors when trying to install Vault 2016. Also, make sure when installing the Vault Server that you do not have any antivirus tools running as this can cause issues and ADMS Console may not run.

Please let me know how things go with your upgrade.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi,

maybe its because you want to install Vault 2016 on an unsupported OS. You need minimum WS2012.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/vault-products/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/S...

So the pre check can prevent the uninstall of 2014.

Cheers

Hi Thomas, As per the Autodesk Vault Server Requirements, Supported Operating Systems are - 1) Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Foundation, Essentials, Standard, Datacenter 2) Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, Standard, Datacenter 3) Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise (SP1) (Vault Basic Only) 4) Microsoft Windows 8 Professional, Enterprise (Vault Basic only) 5) Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional, Enterprise (Vault Basic only) But while installation vault 2016 in server with OS - WS 2008 R2 Enterprise (SP1) pre check for Operating System was Successful. Hi,

from your logfile it seems that its somehow related to

Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable

Try to uninstall V2014 manually and after this V2016. I don't know about where to delete reg keys afterwards. Maybe its also enough to uninstall MS Visual C++ first and run the installation again.

Is this server a test server or did you plan to use WS2008 R2 also for production server? If so I would recommend to use a supported OS to be able to get future support by Autodesk. Just to make sure, I don't want to start a discussion about this 🙂 but even if you will able to install V2016 it could happen that you face other issues later based on the unsupported OS version.

Cheers

Hi @Anonymous,

I understand how complex migrating the vault can be especially when using one server. The best approach is to make sure you always have a backup to fall back on. It is not worth your time trying to do an in-place upgrade on an unsupported OS. As @Thomas_Helm is correct you should not install Vault 2016 on an unsupported OS even if the pre-check does not stop you. Because the first time you open a support case the vault technical support group will have you reproduced the issue in a supported combination before working on the case.

As @johannes.bauer suggested if you are also trying to upgrade Vault editions you would migrate to Vault 2016 and then you would do an in-place upgrade to upgrade the Vault edition by installing the newer addition. Once anyone upgrades Vault editions you cannot go back to an older edition.

Steps to resolve the unsupported OS:

  1. Backup Vault Server and any other files on the server
  2. Format and install supported OS
  3. Install all Windows updates
  4. Install Vault Server
  5. Install all Vault updates
  6. Restore Vault backup
  7. Take new vault backup
  8. Test Vault Server
  9. Upgrade end-user software to 2016

Jason

Thank you @Jason.Courtemanche and @Thomas_Helm for helping me out. As suggested, will try to get the Supported OS first then will continue with the Installation of Vault 2016 and restoring the back up.

Hi @Jason.Courtemanche, We have procured a Test Server with Windows Server 2012. Now we will be doing the migration in this Test Server. In this server the vault size is ~100gb (database 9.24gb & file store 84.08gb). Server doesn’t have enough space to create backup {63.8gb left in C: & 22.3gb left in I:} Need some help with below doubts before we actually start the migration. 1. Is it possible to create backup excluding file store? Can the existing file store location be used to restore in ADMS 2016? 2. Will Uninstalling ADMS 2014 removes file stores as well? 3. In Test server, is it still advisable to let ADMS 2016 installation to automatically uninstall ADMS 2014? Will there be similar errors happened in previous server (sandbox server)? Or Manual uninstall is preferred? 4. Sandbox server (previous server with WS 2008 SP1) had issues just because of non-compatible OS? 5. What’s the best way to create backup, install 2016 & restore backup? Clarity regarding the above queries will help us plan and estimate the migration activity better. Thanks in advance.

Hi @Anonymous,

1. Is it possible to create backup excluding file store? Can the existing file store location be used to restore in ADMS 2016?

There are only two supported ways to backup a Vault Server. First is through the ADMS Console, Tools > Backup & Restore. The second is to use the 3rd party backup method. If you don't have enough file storage you could backup to a remote filestore or add a hard drive to the server. The cost of a hard drive is far cheaper than the cost of recreating 84gb of work.

2. Will Uninstalling ADMS 2014 removes file stores as well?

No, but I would not make a major change like uninstalling the Vault software without a valid vault backup. If you uninstall SQL Server it will delete the Vault databases, includes both: .mdf & .ldf files

3. In Test server, is it still advisable to let ADMS 2016 installation to automatically uninstall ADMS 2014?

If you are making a new test server there is no reason to install ADMS 2014 and then install 2016. If you are repurposing a computer I would take advantage of starting fresh by formatting, reinstalling Windows and all Windows updates, instead of an in-place upgrade of WIndows OS.

3a. Will there be similar errors happened in the previous server (sandbox server)? Or Manual uninstall is preferred?

Either way is fine: uninstall Vault first or doing an in-place upgraded but as you know if something goes wrong with the in-place upgraded it's not easily fixed. An in-place upgrade is only an option if the two different Vault Versions share a supported OS.

4. Sandbox server (previous server with WS 2008 SP1) had issues just because of non-compatible OS?

Correct this happens when installing Vault on an unsupported OS as its not tested.

5. What’s the best way to create backup, install 2016 & restore backup? Clarity regarding the above queries will help us plan and estimate the migration activity better.

After restoring the Vault backup you will want to wait till the filestore validation finishes. This starts in the background once you restore a Vault backup. You can check to see if its still running by opening the ADMS Console, Select Tools > View Server Task. Once this task is finished then do a Vault backup.

Jason

Thank you very much @Jason.Courtemanche,

Below is one more query we have -

1) As per the Vault Server 2016 Requirements Hard Disk required is

  • 100 GB disk space (Minimum)
  • 200 GB disk space (Recommended)

But in the Test Server we are working on, Drive C has 68 GB left out of 100 GB and Drive I has 30 GB left out of 199 GB. Will this be an issue ?

Hi @Anonymous,

No that would not be an issue as there is enough hard drive space to install the Vault Server. The issue would be if you tried to restore a Vault backup there, it is a possibility that you could run out of hard drive space. When restoring a Vault backup you can set the restore location to a different hard drive with more room and avoid the error of maxing out the hard drive.
