Lifecycle Transition Criteria "Notes is empty"

(Vault Professional 2017)

Hello All,

I have an problem in trying to create a Transition Criteria where the Notes property is empty.  The previous Vault manager has successfully added this condition, as shown in the first attached image.  Note that the 'Property', 'Condition', and 'Value' entries are filled with "Notes", "is", and a blank respectively.  Because the 'Value' is blank, it will not let me add this as a new Criteria (Add and Replace buttons are greyed out).  This is fine for the transition shown since it already exists, but I cannot add this criteria to other transitions.

I saw that in the existing Criteria list, this criteria comes up as "Notes is empty".  Thus I tried filling in the value as "empty", but then criteria is literally asking for the text string "empty".  This is shown in the second image.  Note that the Add and Replace buttons are active, since this is a valid criteria

I'm not sure if this helps, but the Comment property uses a different condition list.  This comment has the option for the condition to be "is empty" or "is not empty" with the value entry left as blank.  This is shown in the third image.  Note that the Add and Replace buttons are active, because this is a valid criteria.   This is not available for the Notes property.

Any tips on how to add this "Notes is empty" criteria would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,...

Is this a user defined property?  If so, is the property set to "Requires Value = True"?  This might prevent you from seeing "Empty" in the criteria list.

Thank you for the quick reply,

Yes it is a user defined property.  The 'Requires Value' item is currently set to "False" as shown in the image below.  My understanding is that means it should be able to work with a blank value.  I tried setting it to "True" just to test its behavior, and it resulted in having a warning pop up saying that I must have a value for the "Notes" property any time I tried to do a Lifecycle State change.

Ok,... I hoped it would be that easy... I guess not.

Could you possibly post an image of the settings for that property?  Maybe something will jump out that is obvious.

Thank for the image.  Your property has a list value assigned.  I did some testing (using Vault 2019), and I was able to reproduce the problem with a test property containing list values.  When I took out the list values, I was able to select the Condition "is empty".

I'm not sure if this is intended behavior or not, but it appears that having the list value removes that option from the transition criteria conditions.

Hello Chris,

That worked, but I believe that this is shouldn't be an intended feature.  Our designers use Notes to record any unfinished tasks before the drawing is complete.  We use multiple pre-made List Values to for these notes, but require the criteria that the Notes must be empty before release.

Thank you for your help.  Hopefully this can be addressed in the future, because right now I have to delete all List Values, add the 'is empty' criteria, and then re-add the List Values to make everything work properly.

Regards,
