Item numbering (post part generation)

Hi I'm looking at setting up an auto numbering system using vault, however, as we generate a lot of concept designs that don't generally end up getting manufactured, I'd like to be able to assign a part number once it is deemed ready for manufacture. Is that possible in Vault, I tried doing a rename function but it requires the numbering scheme to be active to work. This may cause issue with staff saving parts while I am creating numbers. Any ideas? Thanks!

Could you keep the part name separate to the file name?

Hi Paul. Sorry, I'm not sure I follow. Is there a way of assigning part numbers that don't rename the file?

By Default Inventor will make the part number, and browser node name the same as the file name. After the initial save you cab override the part number if you like. So you could 'hide' the file name in Vault and just use the part number iProperty instead?

At first glance, I'd build two numbering systems. One for Concept designs and a second one for Production designs.  Make the Concept system the default, so it is easiest for your users to use it.  When a design is approved for production you can either rename the Concept components to the Production system or use Copy-Design to create a Production variant.

I don't know if you can make different numbering systems available to different users (by Vault role, for example), but that might be a way to force the correct numbering system.  There may be some settings with Categories and Items that can help with that as well.

I've created dual numbering schemes, one with basic text "Rename me" and then a proper engineering scheme to be applied at a later date. I'll see how that goes but its a real shame I can't have a numbering scheme that can be applied before request for manufacture without it being active all the time. Our workflow doesn't require a part number till something is required in metal.
