Getting a new workstation to host vault server and restoring the entire vault from the inaccessible/damaged workstation.

Hi, I am using the vault professional 2024

I was able to set up the server and client on the same workstation, and have been testing it out with Inventor professional and AutoCAD

I also set the vault backup folder to a cloud storage synched to the workstation (the backup is not initiated automatically though)

However, I am really concerned about not losing data, and it still feels like something is not right.

I would like to know the chances of getting the entire vault restored on a new workstation, if the old workstation hosting the server became damaged/inaccessible?

What do you think about the set-up ass a whole?

I appreciate your kind feedbacks.

I would not use the same computer to host the server, and work on it at the same time. Are you the only one in the company working with Vault - also in the (near) future?

If you have a backup of the "old" vault, you should be able to restore it on another new PC, with no risk to do something wrong on the old PC.

if the harddrive is still good you should be able to take it out & put it in another server otherwise hopefully you have a backup of that server somewhere

As with any backup strategy, the strategy is only good if it is tested regularly.

You need to know that when the backup is executed, that the backed up data gets to the stored location intact and that you have a recovery plan and have tested that recovery plan and tested the recovery plan frequently.

I do agree with @johan.degreef you may want to rethink having the Vault Server on your workstation.

Thanks johan, lovely question to reflect on, having the server and client on the same workstation was a temporal arrangement. The needful would be done.

Thanks DarrenP, I guess that's another way to look at it, although I am exploring the worst case scenarios, that's why I stated the SSD/HHD as been inaccessible, damaged or corrupt.

Thanks, @ihayesjr, I would do a test run then.

I would have loved the test-run to be a direct replica of the worst case scenarios. I am not quite sure of the best approach to take yet.

Sadly, my workstation is more powerful than the central workstation (which is how the installation ended up temporally on my machine), and as at the time I'm writing this, we can't afford anything going wrong.

I am open to more suggestions✍️

If you mean by "central workstation", you are talking about the workstation which could hold Vault Server, what is the difference in specs?

The server doesn't need powerful graphics. It needs a good amount of memory and disk space. These could vary depending on the number of users.

Indeed

@ofonime.william We run our Vault server on an old cad machine from 7 yrs ago, and it runs just fine. Put Windows Server 2019, an SQL Express edition on it and you good to go. We use it for 4 cad users

@ihayesjr That's Good to know.

For the machines, we are talking a 2TB (mine) vs about 600GB disk (central machine), a 32G vs an 16GB RAM etc. 3 Vault Clients are currently implemented.

I thought about the "Single Site"  and  "Full Replication" approach, would you advise this?  Are there any caveats to the full replication.

I recommend that you contact your Autodesk Partner\Reseller to discuss your Vault deployment needs. This way they can understand all factors of your environment and provide you with the best recommendations.

And just to be a spoilsport: Vault Professional Server is not supported on a workstation OS.
