Get description, mass and volume from file

Hi,

I guess I have a bit of a weird question.

At my work we are using the Vault professional. This already contains alot of products files. Now the question arose if there was an easy way to collect the following info from different files:

  • description
  • mass
  • volume

Does anyone have an idea how I can do those quickly for specific files? As an output file, excel or text file would be fine.

I know you can open the file and then look at iProperties>Physical and find this info. However, this needs to be done for 7000 files. So I hope someone has a better tip.

Hi,

Vault is "aware" of Inventor properties only if they are mapped to Vault properties. If you don't have description, mass and volume somehow mapped for files that you want to collet infomation about then you can't get that information right away.

If you have Description iProperty as it was in default configuration:

then for this one you can enable "Description" in main grid (or in search result if you are creating search list of files that you want to look at), select all entries, ctr+c and than ctrl+v into Excel file:

or  eventually you can select files and use Export feature:

But for phisical properties it is not so easy (they are not directly exposed for Vault mappings). So first you would need to insert it into iProperty inside each file, and then map that iProperty to the Vault property to see results as for Description.

Hi,

Thank you for your message. For future files this would be useful. But if I understand correctly you would still have to add this with each file and thus open them one by one.

Yes, you cannot map physical properties to Vault if they are not put earlier into each file custom iProperty.
