Hello all,

new to the forum, first post. I am a (frequent)inventor user for abous 6 jears now. I work as a freelancer and my projects are getting more and bigger. I can work wel with inventor but seem to get confused when it comes to implementing vault, so i can work with/hire a partner.

I am trying to figure out how and where to set up vault basic so that i, and someone else can acces it from different locations. i bought a 4TB NAS as a file store/backup. but is this the way ? or do I need a additional server/pc? Will everthing be fast and accessible enough if i run the vault from my pc?

Thank you !

Hello Colton...

When you say different locations...do you mean within a firewall (same LAN/WAN) or different physical locations. Do you have access to a VPN?

If you don't have either, Vault does have the capability provide a secure connection to your Vaut via a secure "Vault Gateway", but unfortunately you will need to upgrade to Vault Pro to have access to this utility.

To answer your second question...

What is nice about Vault is flexible in that you can start small and on your local PC and then expand into a dedicated machine/server. As as you grow even further, you can just restore your backup onto a new server and eventually upgrade to Vault Pro and keep going.

The real question is can your local PC handle the processes/resources that will be occurring as you grow. If it seems to bottle neck you and your users....it's time to separate them.

Best,

Thanks Steve,

I have a small office at home where someone could join me, but it could be that that person rather work from home, as i could imagine. I did not know that vault gateway was not available to vault basic users(as I am new to the vault infrastructure). So in that case i would need to have a VPN. I'm worried that a VPN could be a bit slow as i use it to log on to a server of a company i work with. This is a single user project though and i imagine that working with vault illiminates the lag as you work local? I'll take your advice and start with what i have, upgrade my workstation and install vault on it. and use my NAS as the file store/backup. If needed, I will upgrade with a server later down the road.

Thank you !

Just for what it's worth, a lot of our users periodically work from home on a VPN and really don't notice much of a delay. What's nice about Vault, it only downloads/uploads the files that are out of date or require a check-in. If the local files match Vault, there's no data transferred other than just the check to make sure they match. So, in my mind would be worth a try.

As for the computer/server, should work as you mentioned above.

Just an FYI...Pretty sure that SQL Express and Vault 2026 have a 10Gb on just the db size (this does not include the filestore size) before you have to upgrade to full SQL.

And, if you eventually do reach out to Vault Pro, not sure regular Windows is supported, has to be on Windows Server OS.

Wherever you end up, it's all forward compatible as you grow.

Good Luck!
