ADMS Upgrade Error "The database must be the same version as this Autodesk data management server..."

I received this error while upgrading over the weekend.  Searching the forums and any documentation I could find didn't result in an answer.  All our prerequisites matched and the pre-checks ran fine.  What we found is: even though our SQL version was correct, all the databases were set at a compatibility level below the requirement.  Once this was adjusted on each database in SQL, we were able to progress and complete the upgrade.  Posting so this information is more readily available when needed.  If this information is available somewhere else, would be grateful to be pointed to it.

@ChristiPedersen

What compatibility level were your databases, and what did you change them to?

What version and edition of SQL are you using?

The compatibility level of our databases was 2012.  We moved them to 2016 after receiving the error.

Our SQL version is 2016 Standard.
I couldn't find any documentation on the issue and the pre-checks didn't flag anything so I was hoping to help others who might experience it.

Everything is running fine on our end now.

What versions of Vault were you migrating from and to?

From 2020 to 2022.  Is there something with our workflow you think we should have done differently?  Everything functions now, but always looking to increase our knowledge for the next time.

I ask because that message is typically used for a different issue. We don't check the database's compatibility level during upgrades. Also, we didn't support the 2016 compatibility level until the 2022.4 Update.

Did you have that update installed and then restored a 2020 backup?

We have not done that update yet and we did not use a restore to upgrade.  We simply installed Vault Server 2022 and let it migrate.  We are keeping our users on Inventor 2020 until our support files are all set up.  We have tested vault works on 2020 or 2022 and everyone is functioning fine.  We can install the update this weekend if its critical.

I have been confused about updates lately.  I can see them if I go to the "Products Updates" page but cannot see them if I look under Products (screenshot attached).

Ok, thanks for the additional information.

Since you installed Vault 2022 on top of Vault 2020, the compatibility level was not the cause of the error. So I am surprised it had any effect on the upgrade.

As you can see from the Vault 2022 release notes, the compatibility level should remain at 2012.

  • When using SQL Server 2016, SQL 2017 or SQL Server 2019, all databases must remain at the SQL 2012 compatibility level. New databases created using the Vault Server Console will be set for 2012 compatibility level automatically.

It was not until 2022.4 that we supported the 2016 compatibility level.

In any case, I am glad you are upgraded. However, please install 2022.4 Update on the server, so you have all the updates required for that level.

We are aware of the issues with the management portal showing updates. We are working on those.
