Vault API and .NET Core .netstandard 2.0

Dear

I want to reference Vault API in my .Net Core and netstandard projects.

Are the Vault API assemblies build for net472-net48 compatible with .net core or netstandard?

If not, when will the API be ported/support .Net Core and netstandard?

Best Regards

Jonas

Hi Jonas,

To my knowledge, this is the first time the question has been raised, so it isn't currently planned. I'll raise this concern to folks on the development team for future consideration. Additionally, if you post this on the Idea Station, that would bring additional visibility.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Jonas,
As a developer, I am curious: what is driving you to use .NET core/standard to interact with Vault.
Why not the full .NET Framework?

Hi all

It is not possible to use the Vault API inside a .net core desktop/web application. As for web, microsoft recommends using .NET core in all web applications. UWP desktop applications Modern desktop applications.

As the microsoft world is shifting to .netstandard and .net core. I a Autodesk Vault developer felt last year the urge to start moving. This year and next years it will be very important to continue innovating.

- The full .Net Framework will always be supported by Microsoft but stopped innovating.

- NET core/standard, as .NET5 (this november) and upcomming .NET6, .. will continue to grow and have new functionality.

- All popular nugets already support or moving to netstandard. Some are transitioning to .netstandard only.

- Performance and scalability

- Modern desktop applications with UWP. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/architecture/modernize-desktop/why-modern-applications

- Cross-platform support, .. for example creating a app on android to communicate with Vault, using the Vault API is not possible. The correct way would be building a Web API that returns info from Vault. Microsoft recommends running .NET Core with ASP.NET Core for the best performance and scale. (but thats not compatible with Vault API's).

- Microsoft recommends running .NET Core with ASP.NET Core for the best performance and scale.
