Hi All,
I am hoping that someone could explain to me in simple terms what the GIS format is? and what exactly it is used for? typical programs that utilise this format. its not something I have come across so far in my career.
Using our typical non-Autodesk modelling software I cannot save to GIS format, is there a program in the AEC collection that would allow me to export to this format? or provide me data in this format? .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
GIS is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data.
GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication, efficiency, management, and decision-making.
The Autodesk product that handles GIS formats is Map 3D. Civil 3d will also handle it since it included Map 3D.
GIS is not a format. Throughout the world there are probably a couple of dozen GIS formats. You'd need to know what format you need to produce to see if Map 3D could export it.
You mention "modelling software". Usually the only things modeled in GIS are terrestrial features. You can model networks; Road, Sewer, Water, Electric, etc. There can also be included terrain data and land images.
If you describe what you're modeling and what kind of GIS you're aiming for. More specific suggestions may occur to someone.
