Shear Capacity for Circular Sections - complications

Dear all,

I have developed a a SBD model for RC pile design and would like to determine the shear capacity.

On further inspection of the results it was apparent that the the effective depth exceeded the diameter of the pile. Another point of concern was that the area of tensile reinforcement is taken to be the reinforcement below the elastic neutral axis of the section, based on the transformed section properties. Taking the area of steel below the elastic N.A is not my concern but rather why the section properties need to be transformed. Should not the area be tensile reinforcement be not the area of the steel under the elastic neutral axis. Further clarification on this point would be appreciated. Thirdly I would like to understand how the value of bw has been determined. This is the smallest width of section in the tensile area which for elastic rectangular beam sections is no problem, but for circles the question remains unclear. Finally is possible to include any shear links / spiral reinforcement within my model ?

Any assistance on the above would be much appreciated.

I am using ASBD 2018 version 18.0.696.0

Hi Bejan,

We had implemented shear design for circular sections described in the J. J. Orr paper along with some other improvements to EC shear design in SBD 2022 ( Release Notes ) to address the issues you described.

New parameters are added to the Design Data for Shear form where you can set shear steel radius as well as you can specify spiral links by setting the pitch. See screenshot.

FYI, SBD 2022.1 is already available.

Karoly
