Strange sky Wiggle in VR presentation

Hello,

I am facing this strange behavior inside Stingray while playing in VR.

I started this scene from the HTC VIVE template, and while playing in VR you can see the sky wiggle, and anything with alpha that it is against the sky also will wiggle.

I recorded the preview and I try to stay as still possible but that wiggle really it is the sky.

I started this project in an early version of Stingray, 1.4 -1.5 and I don't recall this happening.  Then I started this project from scratch and still the same problem.

Your input is appreciated.

Interesting.  So I just reproduced the error you are noticing and well, i believe this is actually not a stingray issue but rather a biological one.  Yes, i know this is going to sound a tad crazy, but when i placed the headset on my desk and looked through the headset the problem went away.  I then tried to do the same thing again with the headset on my face but not connected with the strap.  just held in place with my hands and grounded my elbows on my chairs arms.  I noticed it very faintly.  Then i tried to put it on again with the strap and it came immediately back.  wiggle reproduced.  I then just sat in very much silence and realized the wiggle was in the exact same timing as my heartbeat.  Then i noticed that i could feel the pulse in the back of my head due to some pressure on the strap.  So, the long and the short, i believe that the sensitivity of the headset is responding to the fact that I have a pulse and that my head wiggles ever so slightly with my heartbeat.  Really interesting discovery.  This is of course exacerbated by distance as an angle of deviation over a very far distance is made noticeable as the effective distance traveled even by a miniature movement is great.  So the sky shows it quite remarkably whereas the objects up close show it much less.

Thank you Paul for taking a look at this.

Even tho I really liked your answer and I was about to Vote " Paul for President "  🙂 I believe that's not the real issue. I been using Stingray for a few versions now and I don't recall seeing this strange behavior.

I just created a simple scene on Stingray 1.4, same building and a few trees and there is not sky wiggle.  I placed more trees and elements and still nothing.

This problem is exclusive of 1.6  I also noticed some strange behavior with PNG and I think it may be related to this.

Let me explain.

I have this ground texture with a simple grass PNG image, when loaded in to Stingray, if you look at that texture it will also wiggle even tho the material is not set to transparent. If I change that texture to JPG there is no wiggle.

Same file with same PNG texture on Stingray 1.4 you won't see any wiggle.

I don't know what type of texture is used for the sky, but I am guessing it may be a PNG with transparency, and that is creating the wiggle that is consistent with other PNG textures in Stingray 1.6

If you or any Stingray team needs the files to test I can share with you, let me know.

best regards.

Fco.

Oh, well, you definitely should not be using JPG or PNG for skies if you want the best look anyhow.  You should be using DDS.  This way if/when you bake it will produce lighting effects.  I need to do a video on the process but yea, you want to use a Hi Dynamic Range image with 16bit DDS.

Ill look into the sky wiggle again but with my tests what I responded with first was what I found.  I did not know to change material types though.

Hi Paul,

I haven't changed the material of the sky, I don't even know how to do it 😛

The Sky is the default Sky, the JPG and PNG are textures from my scene models.

Also I do not have this problem with earlier version of Stingray, 1.4 or so.

Hi Fransisco, do you have reflection probes in your scene? If so, please try to disable them and try again. I have seen some strange vibration happening on some materials in 1.6 and disabling the reflection probes solved it.
