error "Failed to Initialize Stone + Wire connection

I've gone into common utilities and tried to restart stone + wire, it restarts then shuts down. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Smoke 2013.
It will not let me start up

I am running a mac pro, duel quad core 2.26 with 12 GB ram, Mac os X 10.6.8 in 64bit, Radeon HD 4870 Video card

Please help ASAP

Thank you

Good News Everybody, Smoke is up and running....Thank you Robert & Brian
Here is how I corrected the problem, Follow Brian's post on this thread it has some go links to follow.
Here is a email he sent to me with another step I followed:

I have been following your thread... Robert is a true tech guy from Autodesk, so hopefully he can find the issue.

Here are a few tips and 1 question:
How did you put the media folder on the FW800, and what did you do with the original one it places on your system drive? Did you follow the steps and the video on how to do this by modifying the configs?
http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Smoke/enu/2013/Help/z_Release_Notes#trouble

About half way down the page and there is a video.

Tips:
1. Only have 1 internet connection active when you install Smoke. Pick ether or wireless.
2. If you used the other links I sent you shouldn;t have issues with DHCP when your IP changes (localhost) But you need to have an internet connection for Smoke to Start.
3. If you have your Media folder on a FW drive (properly setup) then that drive needs to be mounted as well to start.
4. The Stone+Wire relies and configs based on IP address.

I would suggest using the Smoke uninstaller and uninstalling Smoke. Then use the Go to Folder and go to /usr/discreet and delete the /discreet folder. This will completely remove all things Autodesk and Smoke. I assume you have no projects yet.

Then with only 1 internet connection... reinstall Smoke. Let it place the Autodesk media Folder on your system drive and then follow the steps and the video to use your FW800 drive and make a new folder.

Here is something I also did in addition to all of the steps above:

Here is what I've also done:
I ran disk utility and cleaned the disk permissions up
I uninstalled Smoke and reinstalled it and tried to start it up...same error
Closed all Airport connections (printer runs on it) rebooted... same error
One thing I did notice is that on Aug 2nd Smoke went into the designated storage disk and created a file called "Autodesk Media Storage" (this disk is running on firewire 800, if that is important)
I did notice if I go into the Smoke common utility, service utility that when I try to restart Stone+Wire it it disconnects the wiretap Server while it tries to startup S+W
Hope this helps everybody. I would follow the clean up of the discreet file and then re download a fresh free copy just incase
Thanks again to Robert & Brian they were a great help.

I've just downloaded PreReleaseV2 on a new MBPro. I also get the message can't initialize stone, hit esc. I had smoke working on an old 2006 MBPro, so I know it should work. Below is my error log from the shell. I've gone through the steps in this thread and all looks fine.

So this was even before creating a single project in Smoke, right?
Looks like your stone+wire database didn't install properly.

Do NOT do this if you have existing projects you wish to keep!

Here's what I recommend doing:
1. Use the uninstaller to uninstall Smoke.
2. Open the Terminal app from the Applications > Utilities folder.
3. Type this command in the Terminal:
sudo rm -rf /usr/discreet/
4. Restart your Mac and reinstall Smoke.

Let me know if this helped.

Robert.

I did this, but still cannot get Smoke 2013 to start. Do I need to download a new copy? It was working fine for about 3 weeks.
I am on iMac late 2012 model.
Is this happen because of my internet provider?
Any help would be appreciated.

Let's also check the other logs and the config files:

1. Open the Terminal app from Applications > Utilities and type:
cat /usr/discreet/sw/log/sw_probed.log

2. Post any errors here.
3. Type:
cat /usr/discreet/sw/cfg/sw_framestore_map

Hi Douglas.

There are no error messages. That's strange.
Can you please also post the output of this command:

cat /usr/discreet/sw/log/sw_dbd.log

Also, open the Smoke Setup app and go to the "Media Storage" tab. Do you have more than one entry in the list?
Look at the "Location" field for each entry and then open Finder and make sure that the folder exists and can be opened. Pay attention to the drive name, make sure it's exactly as entered in the Smoke Setup app. Sometimes following a crash, Mac OS tends to alter the name of attached drives.

Robert.

Hi Pitchapa.

That's a strange error you're getting. I've seen that in a few cases before and the solution was to completely remove and reinstall Smoke. You say you've already done that and it still does not work.

Did you have any previous versions of Smoke installed before you installed the latest version?
Also, does that computer currently have a wired network connection or is it wireless?

What do you get if you type this in the Terminal app?
ping -t3 `hostname`

Regarding the computer name: yes, you can change it in the System Preferences > Sharing menu, but we don't recommend changing the computer name after you have installed Smoke.

One option would be to do a clean OS reinstall. That way you wipe all traces of the previous user of your Mac and have a clean OS that only contains your settings and apps. You can name it whatever you want and then install Smoke on that clean OS.
Note that doing this will delete any projects you have created in Smoke, so make sure you only do it if you're ok with losing those projects.

Regards,
Robert.

Thank you Robert.

There were no previous versions of Smoke on this computer. I removed it, as well as the file on the external drive, and re-installed smoke. Still the same problem. I have a cable connection for the internet, not wireless.

Here is the information from the terminal:

I may do a clean OS reinstall. It is late 2012 iMac, so I will try to talk to Apple if I can do this from my time machine backup.

Thank you for your generosity.

Just realized my modem is not a DHCP modem.

Also when I reinstall Smoke, it does not ask me where to put the media files.

I will try to get new DHCP modem, see if that repairs the issue.
Message 37 of 43

in reply to: Anonymous

Hi.

The modem is not the problem. From the Terminal output you posted earlier it looks like your Mac is able to detect itself via the network.
It's normal for Smoke not to ask about the media storage location again, because when you uninstall Smoke certain files and folders are not deleted, including the configuration file that holds the path to the media storage. The Smoke installer sees that path and doesn't ask you for it anymore.

If you don't have any projects you want to keep, please use the uninstaller to remove all versions of Smoke, then open Terminal and type:
sudo rm -rf /usr/discreet

Be warned that this command will delete all your projects!

Then restart your Mac and reinstall Smoke.
I know you've followed a similar procedure before, but try it again just in case.

Regards,
Robert.

Thank you Robert. I reinstalled the OS X only, did not wipe the entire drive.

I did change modems to do this, as you have to have DHCP for Apple to let you do this on late 2012 iMac.

I also checked with internet company to verify persistent IP address.

So far, I reinstalled Smoke 2013, but get same error as before. I maybe need to wipe all of Macintosh HD clean, reinstall my Illustrator and After Effects. Right now there is too much work to do with AE., so maybe I wait until holiday to do all of this.

Thank you again for your help. Do you suggest clean entire HD? As I said I only reinstalled OS X with recovery mode.

I do look forward to getting Smoke to work. Looks more different than After Effects.

Thank you again.

Maybe this can tell something about the error and solution. It can be a big problem to clean wipe Mac HD, reinstall all software. Maybe new service pack will fix the problem.

Thank you,

Hi Pitchapa.

There's definitely an issue with your Stone+Wire installation. If you can't install a clean OS right now and you have no projects in Smoke that you want to keep, try the solution I suggested in my previous message: uninstall Smoke then remove the /usr/discreet folder.

You might also want to open the Disk Utility app and run the "check permissions" and "repair permissions" operations on your system drive.

If you are entitled to phone support, I advise opening a support case so that one of our technicians can log into your Mac and troubleshoot this issue.

Regards,
Robert.
