Took a photo of old work to move it to a Digital drawing

Like I stated above, I used a photo of an old drawing I wanted to move to a digital drawing. Well I did all of the line art and saved it. Everything looked good and everything was there. So, I reopened to check and it was gone. I did get a error that it would merge everything together which I was fine with some colorful language and a nice bourbon, I decided to ask a question to everyone. When I bring a photo over to Sketchbook 8.5.1 what do I do to save the work.

1. Save file in .tif format.  Only use .jpg, .png, .psd as the last step.    Only .tif and .psd will maintain layers.

2. Enable viewing of file extensions.  This will allow you to know if you have a .tif or .jpg file.

3.  Use the Save As option instead of Save.  That way you can save versions of your file in progress.  The Save As option will automatically add a number to the end of the file. See Step #10 noted here:
