when I open a psd file in SketchBook I get the following message:  ‘Couldn’t open this file. Either the file’s format or size is not supported, or you may not have the read permissions’

Was this file created in Photoshop or SketchBook?

It is possible that the file is too big for SketchBook.  That is what the error is stating...i.e. Open Photoshop, Save as (new File name), then change the canvas size to be a bit smaller as a test.

Reduce file by 50% in Photoshop and try it in SketchBook again.

Lastly, you can reduce by 90%, 80%, 70% to determine the size you want to put into SketchBook.

Is there a solution to this if you don't have photoshop? I use supplied psd formats to submit designs and there is one giving me this message - i suspect because it is too large.

You are going to have to get the end user to lower the resolution for you manually.  You can try the 7 day trial.
