Importing and editing line drawings

I use sketchbook in a really basic way - importing and touching up line drawings made in ink.  I've always had a problem in using digital colour though as I can't do something really straightforward, which is to import a drawing and lift the linework out so that I can colour it properly.  The drawings I do are all shaded by hand, and I need to be able to keep all of the linework and shading, and effectively add colours behind them.  The only thing I've been able to do is import a drawing, use it as a guide to make a new outline, delete the original and work on the digital image but this means I lose all of my shading work.

I know what I want to do must be CAD 101, and must be really straightforward - so much so that everywhere I've looked for info has assumed I must be trying to do something more complex!   All of the sketches are monochrome with no background, so I'm looking to effectively lift the linework only onto a layer and then colour on a layer below.  Can anyone explain like I'm five?

Many thanks!!

Here are some basics:

Scan Sketch Mobile To Desktop (Once Selected), you can color it and use Layer Lock in a separate layer.
